I was just reading about it and it seems like a pretty cool thing to do if you are interested in your ethnic heritage...and also not too expensive.

Me and the wife used it. Results were intresting, linked me with a bunch of 4th and 5th generation cousins that I know get to ignore like the rest of my cousins.

The most intresting part was how they trace you back to certain regions in the world.

Did 23andme because I wanted the health info. It was pretty cool. 23andme has sales a few times a year- $150 down from $200. Worth it.

I did it recently. It was interesting. It give you regions which span several countries. So if you for specific countries it isn't much help.

Even if you find out who your dad is, he's still not going to love you.

Yep. My uncle swore my great grandfather was Blackfoot Indian, my mom said absolutely not. The results came back with no native american background so my mom was right. Basically almost all European with French/English dominating. But around 2% dot Indian, and 1% Jewish.

I figure if the government wants my DNA they probably already have gotten it from when I've given blood or any other medical related event.

You know the feds want access to that DNA data so they can use it to find you, or one of your relatives should you/they commit a crime. E.g., the perp is Joe, or perp is a first cousin of Joe.

Its not as precise as you think. My dad did it and beyond what we already knew (German) it said 40% Eastern European decent. Yeah, that really narrowed it down.

My sister did it. We always claimed to be pure Irish, but the Norman invasion left its mark.

You get a map with likely regions of the world circled.

I did it and honestly I was very disappointed. Do 23andme for twice the costs but 10 times the results.

I have done it and it is a help in verifying your family tree. Their system checks your family tree against your matches to identify common ancestors. I've fooled with it for several years along with other services and it can be fairly accurate for what it does.

Not just that. Someone who looks at your DNA profile knows more about you than you know about yourself. There are a lot of ways to cause problems for someone if you know their genes.

I did the 23andme because I had a cousin die of cystic fibrosis and I wanted to make I didn't have a recessive gene to pass to my son(thank god I don't)
Through the ancestry part I found I was 100% honky
