One of my former students had an internship on Wall Street. The hours were long. He was not happy in New York so he chose to move to Florida after completing the internship. He now sells long term care insurance and loves that job.

Yes. It sucks if you have any morality to you it’ll either be sucked out of you or you’ll be making choices that prevent you from getting ahead.
Plus the entry level positions are meat grinders - 100 hours a week or more and extremely high stress. The money is incredible, or can be but the trade off isn’t worth it.

Long stint at a bulge bracket in fixed income trading.
Some good people there for sure, but the overwhelming majority are completely insufferable. End up swallowing pride for the dollar.
Now people are advancing due to DEI metrics as opposed to being able to bring revenue into the firms. I saw it change a lot while I worked on the street.

Are you asking about working on Wall Street specifically or working/living in NYC generally?
If it's the former, I suggest you spend some time poking around the forums on Wall Street Oasis.

Maybe some us work in that area in those locations right now….
It’s like every other new job. There is a learning curve. Find a place that will actually train you. The big institutions are a good start as you will start on the ground floor but then learn about all of the different roles.

One of my former employees works in finance in NYC now. He finished his MBA at TCU a couple years ago & took a job up there.
He's actually one of the "finance guys" quoted in that recent WSJ article & absolutely loves it in NYC.

My cousin worked for Goldman Sachs for many years. He made so much freaking money it was insane. It was the bonuses where he made so much. He did it after going to Princeton. He is a smart dude. They partied hard though. Very hard.
