re: Has anyone given up on getting health insurance? (not me this year)

6 person family, cheapest option was gonna run >$1700 per month with $5000 deductible per person.
Switched to Medi-Share, $5000 "deductible" for the family, costs <$500 per month. I understand it has shortcomings, but we barely use the insurance anyway, and I'm willing to take my chances for $15,000 a year in savings.

Meant to say I'd tap into my inheritance. Haha but yeah. Like I said, I have the funds available should I need it. All locked away in accounts I can't touch unless for predetermined reasons. Health care, wedding, etc. Until I reach 45 or my grandparents die.

This is what I'm switching to. $200 a month, $500 deductible, 100% paid coverage up to a million after deductible. It's a higher premium than I have by a touch but way lower deductible.

You have to be godly though. You can't be fat. Like a 6' person won't qualify if they weigh more than 210. You can't smoke, I guess they do nicotine checks. Not supposed to drink or drink much anyways. Probably can't have a pre-existing condition because they want to know your previous two years medical history.

You serious Clark? 2400>900. I'm healthy as an ox. I've gotten sick once in the last 6 years. Only hospital visits have been checkup once a year and 2 hand surgeries. So $900 plus we will say, $100 bucks for a flu shot. Gives me 1400 to save or spend on other shite.
If you're not saving that money and self-insuring, you're truly a fool from a financial perspective.
According to Kaiser, a single 25-34 year old has about a 10% chance of medical bills totaling over $13,000 in a year and a 5% chance of bills totaling over $27,000.
If there wasn't a penalty, I'd be much more inclined to support all the self insurance, but if you're paying the penalty anyway, the numbers aren't in your favor for individuals.

Jesus man, are you not reading what I write?
I have an account. With funds in it. For emergencies. If that drys up (doubtful) I have another account which my stock dividends go to. I can tap into that and even sell those stocks.
I have calculated my risks. And based on my health history and personal habits, barring some major accident (which can happen) I'll be fine.
Now you got me knocking on wood haha

And you wouldn't have that without insurance? I don't understand what your point is.
I understand the math behind all of this. I think you do too, so why are you ignoring the rare but incredibly expensive upper limits on healthcare.

I did. You said the money frees you up to save OR spend it, which is a bad idea.

Good deal, and that is all that matters. Actually paying the penalty is the problem with most of the risk and expected value calculations. If you don't pay the penalty, the numbers quickly swing back in your favor.

Well. Because I have a safety net already established, I can spend the money or invest it or save it. The real thing that pisses me off is the healthy person tax (bullshite penalty). If I put the money I saved into the account I already have established, it would be such a miniscule increase it really would be better off in a higher % interest account.

Yeah the penalty is what throws a wrench into the self-insure vs. Obamacare options.
FWIW, if you're under 30, you can purchase catastrophic plans that let you avoid the penalty. You should look into that if you're going to pay the penalty regardless.

Just a FYI
I'm reasonably healthy, never go to the Dr other than my annual man exam.
Last yr I had a stomach issue and spent 5 days in the hospital getting pain rx, antibiotics and test ran
Bill was right at $50,000
My Insurance (BC/BS) dropped it to $12,500.
So if you have no insurance and something happens the Hospital will screw you

Yeah the penalty is absolute bullshite. Hey, you HAVE to buy this even though you won't use it. It'll cripple you financially, you will forgo that vacation, you won't buy that new outfit. But, you get the satisfaction of knowing you're paying for the dregs.
And if you DON'T buy it, well..... We will just take your money anyway and tell you you're a piece of shite.
This, however, I did not know and I will look into this.

I don't blame you. A lot of healthy people over 65 choose not to get drug coverage, even though they are permanently penalized if they change their mind. There are many pharmacies with $4 generics so I don't blame them. Once they need insulin though...that's a b*$#%
You are taking a risk, but seems like you thought it over.

Other than BCBS what are some other health insurance companies that are cheaper than BCBS that are reputable?

You'd be surprised what hospitals will agree to if you're uninsured. Settling for a steep discount on that 50k bill is preferable to getting nothing.

the reason why the bill is so high is b/c the hospital knows that the insurance company is going to negotiate the price down...basically the insurance company and hospital have already agreed to what the price will be.

they can or you can ask to get the rate that an insurance company gets. I would think if its good enough for BCBS it should be good enough for someone without insurance

I've filed claims over $1 million dollars in a calendar year before. It wasn't fun, but when everything was saddled up, the frustration was preferable to paying the bill myself.

Depends on your state and local doctors, unfortunately.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember you were a fan of the ACA when it was first implemented.
