Has anyone bought cabinets from HD/Lowes?

I'm talking kitchen cabinets. I'd like custom built ones but I'm willing to bet that will take a long time to get due to flood.

Anyone bought their higher end stuff? I don't want particle board, renter house stuff. Is it worth it? Explain.

Some guy at my local watering hole works for HD and sells their cabinets. He came from a long backround in GC and says they are worth what you pay.

I priced out some of the high end ones at Lowes and compared to a cabinet shop my builder recommended. And I bought from the cabinet shop and am glad I did. The shop was a 4 hour drive from my house so you could look for a cabinet shop a little further away. Look in Mississippi, Alabama, even Florida and Georgia. And do it soon, it will probably take a little while for the cabinet orders to start from the flooding.

Installing yourself or paying someone to install them?

I figured I could install them myself to save time. It's all about time frame here. However, I do not want to sacrifice quality.

If I go out of town, how'd I work out the measurements? They'll trust me to do that or send a guy?

A good cabinet shop will send a guy or you will be on the hook. This is a 'get what you pay for' scenario.

Pay for something that you will deal with EVERY DAY for the next -- years. Doors that don't sit correctly. Drawers that sit crooked.

Pay now.

I gave them detailed drawings that I did myself. Then when the house had the drywall in they sent a guy to take measurements and make sure I didn't screw up. Building the cabinets only takes a few weeks but it has to be on their schedule.

Does flood insurance only pay for the lower cabinets that were damaged by water? What about the upper cabinets with no damage? Matching lowers to uppers?

We went with high end Kraft Made from Lowes after Katrina and we've been very pleased. We had door stay break on a big swing out pantry, and they replaced it at no cost and no questions asked. It has a lifetime warranty.

When we remodeled our kitchen 4 years ago we ordered from cabinetgiant.com Cabinet Giant

They use all wood construction- solid for front and drawers, and plywood for the boxes. Dovetailed joints on the drawers and most have the soft closed drawer slides. The only issue we have had is a drawer stopped "soft closing" about 2yrs in. I called them and they sent me replacement drawer slides free, no questions asked.

All of the cabinets showed up on a pallet, I had to assemble and hang, it was very easy.

If you send them measurements they will help you make a layout to maximize storage.

I recommend Riverside Custom Cabinets, their shop is in Industriplex. Call and ask for Donnie, Jr

They just made me some cabinets and had them done in a week.

Kraftmaid cabinets from Lowes are very high quality. Real wood construction, dove tail drawers, etc. The big difference in Kraftmaid vs a "custom" builder is the finish quality. No local shop will have the equipment to put the same finish on that Kraftmaid does. Go look at the ones on display. They've been in those stores for many years, getting hit with buggies and put through hell, and they only have light scratches and scuffs. We've had ours for about 3 years now and they still look new.

I bought them for a house. They looked good. HD model. Don't know how they hold up because she was a whore and I left and she burned the house to the ground. True story.

I've had some from HD for about 10 years. They were the higher end ones. They've held up very well.
