That's not at all how this would work. You're tripling you're labor expense just to get to minimum wage (which is less than you'll have to pay) yet you only want a 10% increase in price.
These people are using Bernie Sanders math

I recently discovered that waiters in Germany aren’t tipped, other than rounding up to the next dollar (euro). They are paid higher wages. Dining was a tad more expensive but not by much. I don’t know, but I imagine the employers don’t have to spend as much on employment overhead because socialized health/retirement etc, and also not a very litigious society like ours.
One thing is for sure, in the USA with our business-government environment, it has been proven that higher wages (in food service) have a more significant impact that goes beyond just the arithmetic of the added dollars on the paystub.

Please learn me on how that'll work.
I never said how much to raise the servers pay. Increase cost of products by 10%. It will be a 10% price decrease for customers who are used to tipping 20%, buisness will be booming for restaurants. Take they extra money the buisness owner is making and divide it up between the servers.
Now back capitalism. The customers at the restaurant are happy still paying 10% less than they used to.... the buisness owner can go up an additional 5% to put in his pockets.... now the owners are happy making more than ever... the customer is happy saving more than ever and all servers get what they are worth.

This. Especially if you live in a smallish town with only a few choices. I TIP. I want good service from a friendly person who remembers that I tip.
My cousin stuffed the waiter for his half of a tab at dinner with our wives. I rolled my eyes. He tried to justify it. I explained how if he continues to do that shite at home he has or will be eating spit. Lol

I ate dinner the other night in rosemary beach and a 20% tip would have been $80.... the little shite that was waiting our table carried the food to us and filled our drinks once. I don’t know where y’all are from but where I’m from kids with GEDs work hard and make a minimum salary for doing brainless work.

You said "a living wage," whatever that abstract idea may be to you.

This makes less than zero sense.

I have no clue what you're trying to get across here, but I bet it doesn't make any sense.

Why should the waiter get a larger tip for bring out 4 steaks at 29.95 each vs bringing out 4 hamburgers at 12.95, is it harder to tote out 4 steaks?
Posted on 7/8/18 at 4:01 pm to choupiquesushi
Because the waiter is tipped on % of what you spend(pre tax).
Don't like the system...don't go out to eat.

This attitude sucks. Same as the Louisiana die hards saying if you don't like how it is leave when bringing up a legitimate problem.
If anyone could present a better idea than the tipping system we have no, fine, but everything brought up is going to put the consumer in a worse position than they are now.

Why does it suck though? Tipping is commonplace in American society. The only people that bitch about it...are the tightwads in here. You can try to spin it any way you want...but you are still a tightwad.
I don't bitch about tipping. When I go out to eat...I factor in tipping into my budget. The guy bitching about $80 being 20% of his meal....well then don't go spending $400 at a restaurant then(Super lame subtle brag btw). You know tipping is expected behavior in American restaurants.

So we're guildes and child labor at some point. We found a better way to do things regarding those and maybe we can regarding how we pay servers. Or maybe not, but that's the way it is mentality is dumb and lazy.

Minimum wage pay for minimum wage work

I agree if you run up a 1000 tab at a super fancy place for just 4 people then maybe 20% is too much, just like a real estate agent isn’t going to take the normal commission on a 10 mil house.
But if the 1000 tab is for 10 people then the waiter probably earned every bit of 20%, mainly because he couldn’t wait on any other tables the whole night.

Just FYI, waiting tables wouldn't be minimum wage work were it paid as traditional labor. A place like chillis would probably pay between $12-15/hour.

No one forced you to go out to eat at a super fancy place and run up a $1000 tab.
And a server at a super fancy place isn't your typical college kid working at Chili's.

And you'll be the only one whose broken a social norm. You can disagree with how it is, but you'll be the only one in violation of a perceived rule.
