And that’s why it’s 20% now. You guys are overthinking this.

what some people fail to realize is that as food prices increase so does the amount you make on a given percentage

So if your bill is $80 @15% the tip is $12

Restaurant prices go up due to inflation to $100 now @ 15% the Waiter waitress now makes $15...they just got a raise for no reason other than the cost of food went up.

I still tip 20%, but damn! inflation isn't a reason for the percentage of tip you give to go up. They get a raise every time the prices go up.

You think maybe he really doesn't know how percentages work? I guess tipping threads are a good place to troll. Everyone has an opinion.

People should check their local laws. It varies quite a bit.

Think of 15% as equivalent to a letter grade of C. They were adequate. If they were good/better than average, go at least 20%. Letter grade B. Really good or great service? A or A+? 25+%.
Servers generally dont get paid shite, but they can pull in a lot more than any salary increase would ever net them if they do a good job. As a server years ago, I loved the tipping system. Your only limitation to raking in lots of cash money is yourself.

I was taught 10% with a minimum of $5 and think it is still appropriate. Not hard to make $20 - $30 bucks an hour at a decent restaurant. If I'm doing fine dining I'll do 20%.

Again, as someone who waited tables for 9 years I rarely tip 20%. 20% is damn good service, and 25% is they helped me with something like a local tip or my kid was an a hole. But most of the time it's 16-18%, I do $2 for every 10 I spent and subtract a buck or 3 from it.

But that's mostly because I know the insides of the job. For example, if I order a drink and they forget it and don't write it down. Or, what pisses me off is a nice restaurant having to auction off the food when it's served by the waiter. If I'm a family of 4 and you don't remember who ordered what at a $30/ plate dinner then you are lazy.

Wait staff in Nola at least typically makes 2.13 an hour. Let that sink in.

Right, but if they don’t make up the difference in tips, then they are entitled to the full minimum wage. None of them ever worry about that because almost all servers make above minimum wage.

15-18% is still a fine tip. Most servers at 15-18% tips can bring in $20-30/hr, so I don’t have any sympathy for their woe is me bitching.
