Yeah but when it comes back and starts moving east who knows what's going to happen. The drilling crews T-time is like 150 hours right now. They're down hole and aren't even thinking about storm packing the well.

what's the story with the cruise ships that port in Galveston? Most leave on Saturday and Sundays.
Got to be a cluster F. Just think of the people that left their cars in those parking lots. They are bound to get water. So you leave on a trip and come back to a different city and your car is flooded many miles away. I know the people who live there will get it worse but the cruisers probably never even thought of that.

Evacuated, gas prices will spike a bit...fill up now

After rising quite a bit yesterday, gasoline futures are only up 4% since the start of the week.

What are the sub surface effects of a hurricane?

The floaters can drag their anchors over pipelines and such and cause some major havoc.

What happens to the offshore rigs during all of this? I'm assuming they are evacuated, the structures should be fine though right?

When a named storm enters the Gulf they evacuate all non-essential personel. When it is clear they need to get everyone off, they put them into "Hurricane Mode" which allows them to control everything remotely.

If remote connection is lost for a set length of time...like 300 seconds, the entire platform is shutdown until people can once again safely be on the platform.

Harborside drive, where the parking and terminals are, is the first thing to flood on the island. even normal rain put several inches of standing water on that street. Yea, that would suck!

A rig 225 miles to the ENE of Harvey has had wind speeds in excess of 50kt (57mph) for the past hour.

CNN just got mad about people in Corpus not taking them seriously and leaving when they say this is going to be catastrophic. That's the result of the media saying every storm that forms is going to be catastrophic and kill everyone.

I get it, but I'm not really sure why folks in Corpus would be prone to ignoring the warnings. There haven't been many significant weather threats there in quite some time.

I know it's not popular but 12z CMC makes a 2nd landfall in South West Louisiana as a tropical storm.

This is why I've been following this thread. The BP meteorologist does not seem to be very informed.

That was the previous 12z, the 00z does not corroborate that.

A relative served on USS Essex in WWII. He went through a lot, including kamikaze attacks, but said the most scared he had ever been was riding out Halsey's Typhoons at sea.
