Juneteenth (a portmanteau of June and nineteenth) is a holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States. Originating in Texas, it is now celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States, with varying official recognition. Specifically, it commemorates Union army general Gordon Granger announcing federal orders in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming that all people held as slaves in Texas were free.
There should be a national holiday recognizing the end of slavery. It's at least as important as Labor Day or Thanksgiving. June is a great month for another national holiday.

Even though he threw a spear at the Roman officer while being pursued, he was unarmed when killed.

How many of these threads are we going to be subjected to today?

In reality, as in the reality that existed during the Civil War, The Emancipation Proclamation actually had no legal merit, nor did it accomplish anything. Given the CSA were, in all ways, viewed as a separate nation when the proclamation was passed, Lincoln's orders had no bearing on what another country did. It is akin to the US, today, saying that the people of Mexico can no longer legally drive cars.
April 9th or 10th would be the more appropriate day for a holiday.

This has been the 10th thread today. But yes, I agree it should be a national holiday.
