Hate to hear that. My MIL had to put down her 14 year old black miniature schnauzer a few weeks ago. It was tough at first but got better. Everything will be alright.

Sorry for your loss. Dogs give the kind of loyalty and love that most people can't come close too. 14 years is a long time.

Sorry to read this. Hard thing to do. But you got 14 great years with great memories.
I had to put my cat down two months ago. He was only 8.5 years old; Aortic Thromboembolism. Hope no pet owner has to ever go through something this traumatic.

Why Dogs Don’t Live as Long as Humans, Explained By A 4-Year Old
quote:
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year old Irish wolfhound, named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog. Ron and Lisa told me that they thought it would be good for the four year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few moments, Belker slipped away peacefully. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I had never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, “People are born so that they learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The four year old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

God damn this makes me sad. Sorry for your loss OP. The two saddest moments of my life were when I had to put my two dogs down. At least your buddy isn't suffering anymore.

gorgeous dog. Some people don't understand how great these pets are. I'm sorry for your loss.

You were lucky to have each other.
Grieve, and when you're ready go get you another pup.

I feel for you. My cat passed away today, had her for nearly 16 years. Was 19 when I got her. So hard but this comes with being a pet owner and now that they are gone so quickly, I don't regret ever spoiling them.

Yes I definitely don't regret ever spoiling her too

At least you did it on Halloween so you'll have his ghost to haunt you. Ghost Dog is still man's best friend.

That's always hard. Remember the good times.

I hate these threads. They give me the sads. One of the worst days in a person's life. Thanks for loving her enough to do the right thing for her. Hopefully soon you will have another one to love.

Sorry man. I've been dreading the day since I got mine. Hope you find peace.

Hugging my buddy everyday, won't be long but he will most definitely know we love him.
