Good job OT on not throwing out names until it was confirmed that the family was notified.
Sometimes, posters get caught up in being 'in the know' but everyone here held off even when it was apparent many of you knew.

OT going soft on us

but seriously, I agree, rare show of class and restraint on the OT

Why is my post getting down-voted? Because of EE ? I was just trying to say that Rock was one of those super- motivated guys who locked in very early on what he wanted. I certainly don't want to bring any negativity to this.

Was a 1979 Cessna 182 N4765N. Probably doing some night flying just to stay current. Plane was owned by an aviation company in Sulfur
Flight Track
Looks like they circled a couple times and tried to head back to the airport

The OT of old would have been ordering pizzas in his name and trying to figure how to hijack his TAF points.

They were up at 4000 when it went out.
It looks like the dipped as low as 2600' at 79mph then shot up to 4300 before it went out

The Cirrus planes have them. Not sure how useful they would be if you weren’t at cruising altitude.
At one time the Cirrus planes had the worst fatality rate of all single engine planes, that may not be the case now. The problem with the parachute is once it deploys the pilot has no control over where the plane will go. There is can still be enough speed to kill the occupants if it slams into a building or mountain side.

Isn’t there a private airstrip in Hackberry? Wonder if he was trying to make to that.

Reading about these crashes gives me anxiety because I start thinking about what they were experiencing in the final seconds.

if you look at his flight path he was trying to head back to the airport.
If you look at the flight path the day before (Monday) looks like they made the same path...flew out to the coast, circled around a few times then back to the airport.
I wonder if they were just training

I knew Rock Palermo. He was a great guy. Every time I saw him he would come to me and shake my hand. He was a very genuine person

yeah, it's some sad stuff, way too little info, but just looking at the flight aware it appears the engine may have quit and they may have been setting up for a forced, off field landing, last reported airspeed was enough energy to keep the wing flying, but it appears they lost data way before impact

Someone earlier in the thread said it was a student and teacher so likely they were training.

I’ve seen a couple YouTube videos of pilots deploying the chute but they were all over large bodies of water.

There’s a serial downvoter amongst us. Maybe a bot, maybe just a miserable person (Oweo).
I could post “hey everyone, I hope you all have a fantastic day and all your wishes are granted” and it would have a downvote in 3 minutes or less.
Now that I see you’ve accumulated 5 dv’s, it must be your mention of EE. That’s the only thing that could explain it.
