The guy was no typical rich lawyer/doctor with an airplane.
He has an ATP and was also a commercial rated helo pilot.

quote:

I learned to fly at Southland Field (KUXL) in 1994, shortly after graduating from LSU Law School. I quickly acquired my multi-engine rating in a Cessna 310R. I fell in love with everything aviation. Fortunately, Civil Air Patrol opened many opportunities to further my flying education. An instrument rating and commercial pilot's license soon followed. Once I acquired 1500 hours, I obtained an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. I later obtained a Commercial Helicopter license. I am type rated in a Eclipse 500 jet. I have over 3500 hours total time of which 1500 is in multi-engine aircraft. I have over 400 hours in jet aircraft. I hold a flight instructor certificate with airplane single engine land, multi-engine, and instrument ratings. During my flying career, I have served as a mission pilot for the Civil Air Patrol, FAA Aviation Safety Counselor, and chief pilot for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office. I currently serve on the Lake Charles Regional Airport Authority.

RIP sir

Obviously qualified. Wonder what happened. This is why I’m terrified of my husband getting licensed but I hate flying already. RIP

It crashed.

In all seriousness, it sounds like he was a great guy. RIP to the two lives lost.

ROCK was the passenger, was not the pilot. Another local guy was the pilot.

Well, with two pilots at the controls, and one with as much experience as Palermo, there must have been a bad mechanical problem to crash on a clear day like today.

Remember when Rock was in Edwin Edwards posse? He seemed like an adult among boys to me. We were waking up half drunk and chirping about politics and he was getting paged by EE and had a sense of purpose and direction. His wife Kim is a wonderful lady. Very sad.

In a plane that size, Rock was able to assist at controls or take over completely. His experience is relevant.

Tragic situation. I’ve always thought that small planes and helicopters should be equipped with parachutes that would at least slow down the plane’s descent, thereby increasing the chances of survival for the occupants.

Tail number was N4765N

Airspeed was dropping down to 64 at last moment and over 4000 feet. Wonder if they stalled out.

Don’t most accidents occur during takeoff and landing? Would make the opportunity to use a parachute almost impossible.

Knew him through his volunteer service with Civil Air Patrol. He was very active in the coordination of resources during Katrina/Rita, flew countless hours for missions and even served as CAP's National Legal Officer.

Great guy. Fair skies and tailwinds
