My information was stolen so I was given options to choose from. I selected the payment option. You are what is wrong by posting.

this is me, would not waste the time on this

Comment was more in general on class action not confined to Equifax.

And there is little data to suggest this breach was the source of any identity theft. The information has never made its way to the dark web, for example.

To everyone who applied for the $125, you are what is wrong with America. You compromised your morals and sold your dignity for a “free” $125. Now, you are getting a fraction of that.

What are you talking about? It was the money or nothing. How did we compromise our morals? Equifax is the one that fricked up. A company that we have no choice but to have to deal with. A company that we never had a choice to allow to posses our credit histories. Equifax was beyond negligent with their lax digital security. Then they lied and tried to cover it up. THEN the CEO used his insider knowledge of breech to his advantage to make more money. Now the FTC is saying they didn't set aside enough money to cover the claims? The FTC is supposed to be protecting the consumer, but obviously that's out the window now too.

breach, but only $31 million was set aside for payments as part of the $700 million settlement, announced last week.

So the people actually affected by this get $31 million of the settlement and the other $669 million goes to who? Lawyers? frick that. This is bullshite.

I already have three separate credit monitoring services through my bank and two separate credit cards. Why would I want another?

Most "credit monitoring" is at a single bureau. The settlement gives you all 3 bureaus for 4 years IIRC.

Regardless, the monitoring is the better option to punish Equifax. I understand it is of little use to most people.

No, that's incorrect, but jumping to conclusions is your strong suit.

I didn’t jump to any conclusions, dumbass. I asked a question of where the other $669 million of the settlement is going. Maybe if you’d read my post instead of jumping to conclusions thinking you’d scored a “gotcha” as if that means jack shite, you’d have noticed I was asking a question.

Not yet anyway. I sold my soul and current high credit rating for $125 like a real American should.

I opted for the $125 for the simple reason I already have credit monitoring. I’d imagine I’m far from the only one who chose this option for that same reason.

Good lord. Are you so fricking stupid I have to spell it out for you? When you see a question followed by what you quoted it’s an implied “if that’s true” type statement. Key word being “IF”. Meaning, I don’t know for sure if this is the case, but if it is, then frick that and it’s bullshite.

So take your bullshite lame “gotcha” accusation and shove it straight up your arse. And unless you can answer my original question instead of being a chode, kindly frick off.

I would still like to know where the other $669 million went if it did not go to the people affected by the breach.

Well you said they'd be more scared of 175 mil suits than one class action. Which is true, but irrelevant.

It will go to people affected by the breach, mostly.

$275MM is fines to the states and federal government.

$300MM, at least, will go to consumers in the form of reimbursements, the $125 option, or credit monitoring and identity theft services. That pool could go as high as $425MM if the claims are higher than expected.

Wouldn’t it have just been easier to post this to begin with instead of jumping to conclusions and throwing out accusations? As for your figures, where did you find that information? I was basing my original question on this part of the article in the OP...

quote:

About 147 million people were affected by the 2017 Equifax EFX, +0.75% breach, but only $31 million was set aside for payments as part of the $700 million settlement, announced last week.

The way that reads it looks like only $31 million of the $700 was set aside for payments to the people affected. That’s seem to be a rather low number don’t you think? Most people who have any common sense should already have a credit monitoring Serivce and would thus opt for the $125 payment.

Honestly, Equifax should have been Arthur Andersen’d for this breach. This is one of those “you had one job” type situations and they screwed it up.

They aren’t accountable to everyday people though, we aren’t their customers. So we get screwed and the beat goes on.
