You can't see it on the GIF, but if you see the full video on that kid he had a ball already in his glove when he caught the foul ball. He gave HIS ball to the girl and he kept the foul ball. You can see it clearly when you see the full video.

So he knew how it was supposed to work even more so than you thought!
