They needed transportation, food, and a place to stay. A lot of the times it was fans helping.

Was once talking with a wrestler who was popular in the 90s, his family was in the business and for example, he talked about how fans who are knowledgeable nurses can be extremely valuable with saving medical costs..but how dangerous that is too.

But in the 80s & territory days, yeah..unless you were a big name..those guys depended on others a lot.

I know people who competatively fish, play softball, etc, that get sponsorships. But I guess that's different.

yeah it is pretty difficult to turn it into a career and it is expensive AF. It takes a while to build sponsors.

However some things have changed. There are now sponsorships to be won by being a college fishing teams, you can create a youtube channel and get a following there.

I have a friend selling BBQ to help pay for seminary. I'm sure there are plenty of atheists that would call him a money grabber or some other shite. Dude wants to pursue his passion. There are a shitton of people that get startup capital or help from friends to get where there going. Don't beat a man down for trying. This was the quickest article I found, but there are several others. Even the pros pay locals to prefish tournaments. That gives them a legup from average Joe trying to make it big.

Pro wrestlers in the 1980s sometimes depended on kindness of others at times..

This is true. I had a great aunt who loved watching wrestling, live or on tv. She never missed it, either way. When territory guys would come through town on their regular circuit, she would cook for them and put a few of them up. Those guys loved her, and always took care of her if she needed something. Such a different time in that regard.

It would be one thing if this baw qualified for a big tournament and was trying to get help to travel for a week or so for ONE big tournament. Nothing wrong with trying to raise some money to help get to a one-off event. Not asking friends and friends of friends to fund his entire cost of living so he can fish full time every day for months at a time.

He is already attending. Yes seminary is expensive AF because all the universities are private. It is more expensive than getting an MBA and a huge reason why there is a shortage of ordained ministers.

I guess ol’ baw out in the field qualified for some big bass fishing tournament circuit....but, shocker, he can’t afford to travel around the country fishing everyday...so he’s asking for donations, selling overpriced raffle tickets, etc. Even gone as far as asking friends to help him out by asking their co-workers, etc for funds or to sell overpriced raffle tickets on his behalf.

He should do like professional golfers and sell shares of his winnings.

Christianity, methodist denomination. This isn't isolated the average rate of student debt for seminary pretty much reflects that of any college student. My friend doesn't have any student debt, but he pastors 3 small churches and getting by. I help when I can.

You can't get full benefits unless ordained nor can you vote on matters. There are a whole lot more locally registered ministers than ordained ministers.

Not being able to vote is a big deal with a lot of churches moving "left"

No worse than a grown arse couple asking for cash only for wedding present to fund their once a lifetime honeymoon. They will even have fundraisers disguised as ‘wedding showers’ and accept cash only.

No better or worse than people sending out there to support their baseball or basketball team...if you can't suport your own kids, then maybe they should pull out! Besides, I need to think of my own grandkids and certainly no one helped with my daughters when they were in sports.
However, the more people fall for this crap, maybe I can see if anyone is stupid enough to give me $$ to support my car collection...
