I’m guessing support would toll while they are in jail and payments start on release

A drunk driver should be in prison. How are they going to pay child support?

I think you're under estimating how many people in this country have zero assets and are essentially judgement proof.

I was wondering if this may be how it works. Similar to a dead-beat parent not paying child support, and that bill continues to increase until the kid turns 18. The debt doesn't go away, it just stops getting increased by the monthly amount (do they accrue interest?)

And, if they are going through wage garnishment, I am pretty sure it does not just stop once the child turns 18 and they have to continue paying until the payments are paid in full.

They would probably owe the back support and have to start paying on it when released, regardless of the age of the child.

And why just child support? If you cause an accident on the interstate and I miss my flight, you should reimburse me. Let's do that law.

Sounds good. But we already have people suing for everything already. I imagine that if Car B hits Car A at a traffic light and someone is late for their plane or job interview..... everyone will now be filing a claim. We will have a big mess on our hands. I want to see people held accountable but this will get crazier.

Add it to the insurance costs.

Then everybody pays.

The problem is.....

they often get sentences of 10-20 years meaning the child will be of age when convict released.

This. Why isn't someone in jail for the better part of their life if they kill someone while drunk? And why limit it to drunk people? Distracted driving is now a thing, and is caused by the same selfishness and carelessness as drinking.

It's a proposal based on the fact the public doesn't want to punish drunk drivers.

Thats what i was thinking. And does this get tied into insurance some how so we all pay even higher auto insurance to cover child support for drunk drivers with no assets?

Just like backpay and in arrears child support, this should be no different. Serve your sentence then go work and pay off your debt to the family you killed.

should be interesting

right now it’s pretty hard to enforce a civil judgement against someone without money. But maybe child support would be something the state would be ok collecting.

you just can’t squeeze blood from a stone

if you’re a doctor and you get taken out by a drunk fry cook your kids aren’t getting taken care of

buy life insurance
