What the media was saying that 3-5 percent of the laying hens were wiped out due to avian flu. And that's the reason for eggs to increase by this much. If half the hens were wiped out, who knows the cost to consumers.

Those are what I have. Black Coppertop French Marans.

Very Predator wary. Breed was developed in coastal France. These are the eggs that James Bond eats. Ian Fleming mentions them in “Octopussy”.

The “ brown” is a mucous varnish produced in the chickens ovum.

50#’s of 14% laying feed is 24.00.

My roosters start at 3:45 AM. The Guinea hens are the racket makers. I love it.

You can raise your own but feed prices are also going through the roof. It would be nice to be able to free range if you live in the country and your neighbors aren't problematic.

Friend of my dad has chicken houses. Gives him all the double yolked eggs he wants since they can't sell them. I think they're my favorite kind of egg.

I bought sixty eggs for 20$ at the Walmarks the other day. That was the cheapest per egg. Now I got to eat all these eggs.

Last week I bought a 18 count carton of organic eggs for $6.99. Was pleasantly surprised.

How does he know they're double yokked before he cracks them?

Mine are true free range. No fence at all. They still eat feed like pigs.

The eggs are delicious. I eat at least 30 a week.

Go grab an egg out of your fridge right now and hold it up to a bright light bulb.

I’m getting 10-12 eggs a day lately. Chickens are awesome.

Your Marans eggs are fine. My hens are older so there eggs aren’t as dark any more.

you mfrs don't live in the country.
All my neighbors have chickens and I'm trying hard not to get my own.
The hawks are crushing my neighbors hens.
If not, then it's the raccoons, rats, coyotes, or foxes.
Predators are everywhere here.

Honestly, I've got to get into a deep dive with him about it.
We haven't hung out in awhile, but last time we talked he was bitching about the hawks tearing up the hens when they were out for the day.
If I decide to get the hens, coop, commit to the whole ordeal, I will pick TF out of those guys brains to be as secure as possible.
Bottom line though, predators will always be present and will almost always find a way through. It's nature.

My Marans chickens are black. I think hawks and eagles like white ,red, and yellow chickens better.

The roosters are constantly watching the hens. Two bald eagles are around my place most of the day. When a raptor flys over he clucks the “haul arse “ call and they run under the trees, tractor shed etc. I have never lost one to a raptor.

Coons have given me trouble. But I just made a wrap around the yard with a light and a .22. And I trap. That keeps them down. The only fox we have lives up the road and she’s married.

They have to get their own water out of the waterway behind my house. These are true free range chickens.

They sure were hanging on for Hurricane Ida. All day they just roamed and stayed on the downside side of stuff. At dark they went on their roost and it was blowing about 75 or so. My mallards blew away.

They have an excellent chicken forum. I thinks it is my backyardckicken.com.

I heard some dude that went to LSU owns it.

Good info, thanks.
I live in Massachusetts, but generally the conditions relate.
I'll check out backyardchicken.
Like I said, I'm trying to stay away from the chickens, but it's only a matter of time.

Ever tried ostrich egg? One ostrich egg is equivalent to 2 dozen chicken eggs.
