The North Rim is a whole different experience. It's nearly a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is an alpine plateau instead of desert. I was snowed on in August on the North Rim. It's also harder to get to, with fewer amenties, so a lot less crowded
we actually stopped and ate lunch at Jacob Lake Inn and it definitely had a different feel to to than the south rim, seemed much less touristy and the real reason to go back and enjoy it from a different perspective.

If you take a bus tour it will be you, your family, 20 Asians and 20 Europeans whose idea of vacation includes a vacation from showering. I'd always rent a car over taking a bus. But if you'd like I'll ask the concierge at work tonight what the best route is.

ETA: Rafting there is not like other places. It's a multi-day, high adventure, bucket list type activity.

And something that I've heard you have to plan months to nearly a year in advance.

Great video of said adventure. This guy has done the canyon, pct, and CDT. Some nice videos.

Have your jet drop you off near the north rim. Take the north kaibab trail. Lunch at phantom ranch. Bright angel trail to el tovar bar at south rim. Car to jet, back to the strip for poker.

We did something similar to what OP is looking for a couple years ago.

We took a "Pink Jeep Tour" and I would definitely recommend you check them out. Only having 6 people in your group vs. a tour bus is a big deal. Check out the link...I am terrible at explaining things.

Going to las vegas end of September and will be planning a day trip to the Grand Canyon. I've been looking at packages and tours, would really like to go on a hike or white water rafting or a helicopter tour. There just so many options.

What was your favorite experience at the grand canyon?

I did a day trip there. The best thing about it was that I got hooked and have been back six times, none of them for fewer than three days.

We did the helicopter tour and really enjoyed it. I remember the copter landing and letting us walk up and look over the edge, bit my wife says we did not do that.

i'll be out there also at the end of September (21-27). Except I'll be running the Grand to Grand Ultra, which starts at the North Rim, and ends at the Grand Staircase. If you end up making it out there during those days, bring me a beer!!

Hey man. Make sure u come back and post how this race turned out for u. Definitely looks like something me and a bud of mine would like to do.

Pick one of the several helicopter tours from Sundance Helicopters. . They have one where you go on a boat ride in the canyon too. It's absolutely awesome. Lasts all day.

We are scheduled to do the rafting/kyaking trip this fall. We strTed planning this trip about a year and a half ago. We put in on 11/23/14 and take out on 12/13/14. Some of our group of 16 have been before but this will be my first trip down the canyon. Can't wait to get to it!!
