Sadly this thread is a perfect example of how much fun the OT used to be before all the boards were segregated into specific topics.

This thread has everything from stupid OT banter to legit musical discussion to your mom jokes.

genuinely curious as to how you could make an argument that The National is more of a rock band than WOD

I'll admit that my love for The National's older albums might cause some biases in regards to that statement, as they used a lot less synth and the sounds were more traditional guitar and drums.

It isn't a position I'm super committed to or anything

I'm not being a pretentious jackass. You said The War on Drugs isn't a rock band and they don't make rock music. I would like for you to define Rock Music and then why they don't fit that definition. You still haven't.

I'm a fan of their music, just don't think that deep voice fits it too well. I love the singer in WOD though. Kinda a mix of Tom petty and bob Dylan.

Yeah that had some barnburners earlier in their career. Mr November, Abel, Slipping Husband, and Available. Berninger could holler pretty good when he had to.

Ya, you are.

I don't need to define anything. Listen to the groups in the Alternative category. Now listen to the groups in the Rock category.

Now listen to WOD. Which category do they sound the most like? That's probably where they should be.

Otherwise just put Bruno Mars in every category so he wins them all and call it a night.

As a decedent of farmers, I take offense to that term.

It depends on what year you're talking about. The alternative category has everything from Sinead O'Connor, CeLo and vampire weekend to Bowie, U2 and Radiohead.

I suppose it's a catchall category for whatever the frick they want.

Rock has everything from Sheryl Crow and Allanis Morsette to the Rolling Stones.

Bands like U2, Coldplay and Muse have wins in both categories.

Do you care to explain to me how War on Drugs isn't rock?

It is. Cee lo green won it a few years back. It does not mean alternative rock, it just means an alternative to the pop, rock, hip hop categories

Jethro Tull won for best metal album over Metallica. Grammy categories are meaningless.

The Grammys categorizations are dumb.

Not thinking The War on Drugs is a rock band is also dumb.

Sturgil Simpson and Jason Isbell and Texas Country bands like Turnpike Troubadours

None of them is black, none of them have a drum machine or auto-tuner covering up their weaknesses. Also, they are not the beer and bros country guys talking about taking their honies out in their pick up trucks and having a party in a corn field...just the two of them , mind you

Hell Black or soul music is pretty much non existent. Guys like Leon Bridges are essentially shunned in the black world for playing old style soul and guys with real vocal range like Aloe Blacc are somewhat marginalized.

Jamie Foxx

Great actor, singer, and comedian.

I watched a video of him singing a George strait song the other day and he killed it.

Yep, Snoop dogg made a career out of remaking George Clinton songs. Every song that he made that wasn't a remake was terrible. He should suck George clintons penis for making him rich.

Snoop is basically a lead singer. It's not his fault he's not also a musician. And I agree, when he's rapping over someone else's beat is always when he's at his best.
