I was reading the other thread about outrageous premiums and someone mentioned Canada having gov healthcare payed through taxes. Where do these taxes hit at? Is it an income tax, sales tax, etc? Would wages go up due to employers not paying for it and would somehow compensate for this? I'm thinking there is no way it would even out. Or is the brunt of the taxes paid by the employer anyway?

FWIW- I hate the idea, anything the Gov runs is horribly managed.

they have a flat 15% income tax across the board, no deductions of any kind.

then they have national sales taxes on anything you buy plus high tarriffs/duties on any products coming into the country

you poor misguided fool. You actually think that they will increase your wages? They are going to give out more bonuses to executives, buy back more stock and watch you do the same work for the same pay

No because while wages may increase, if the employer passed the savings to us, our taxes would increase. We d bring home the same or less, with the only difference being what the name next to the payroll deduction says

I dont believe that would happen. I was thinking of the giant savings employers would be savings. I believe what you said, we would never see it. maybe get a new coffee mug or new furniture in the lobby....

You think most companies are in the business of giving away extra profits?

Do this. Take your current wage tax rate and add to that your overall total healthcare spend. Recalculate.

The word "tax" is just a word. Less money in your pocket - no matter what you call it - is less money.

If universal healthcare becomes a reality, I think some companies that are hard pressed to retain good talent would give the employer-premium to the employees.

But overall, no, the companies would keep it and just be a little more profitable. My guess is that pro-universal healthcare people would push for a mandate that companies give it to their employees. Otherwise, most people would be worse off.

True.

There has to be some trade off beacause i only pay $100 a month for very low deductible coverage. This attracted me to my current job even though the pay was not on par with other employers.

The government would have to prop up hospitals too. They make almost all of their money on private insurance patients

They would have to completely change the medical education system too. Doctors in universal healthcare make far less, no one is going to take 10-15 years and incur 200k+ in debt to come out making 75 grand.

There would be no giant savings. Those payments would just transfer from insurance companies to the health cooperative or whatever they decide to call it.
