Military culture is so weird to me
A lot depends entirely on the branch. Each branch has a completely different culture. Army/Marine bases are completely run down and their enlisted have the shittiest overall lifestyle. Navy is somewhere in the middle, and Air Force is like being a civilian.
Officers with each branch live in a completely different world than enlisted. It’s a night and day difference.
You can bounce around more to different units and try-out for more shite (SF, Recon, Ranger, Sniper, Raiders) as an enlisted guy although it’s incredibly difficult to get your command to approve it. It’s even harder to do that stuff as an officer due to numbers. Officers do get paid A LOT more... they also get more responsibility, more respect, better living quarters, and being an officer looks much better on a resume. I’d say the Marine and Naval officers were to most trained and most prestigious in my experience.
Demographics are a little different between the branches too. Air Force is 90% white and has the most women. Navy is an even mix of black, white, Hispanic, but has the most Pacific Islanders and 2nd to most women.
Army is 33,33,34% black, white, Hispanic. Like the Marine Corps, their women are busted...
Marine Corps is 70% white, 20% Hispanic, 10% black with almost no women and the women we had looked like they were hit by trains. Usually dikes with daddy issues

Wow the military changed from 80’s and early 90’s.
Pay sucked
Only good thing for me was they paid for my college and classes through mail to complete my BA and Masters degree.
Back then if you were a young stupid enlisted person that had no idea what airborne or rangers were you officers talked you into it.
My officer at my first permanent party station asked me to go airborne and told me they had free beer machines and prettt women all over airborne school.
Once my buddy and I got to school there was no free beer machines or hot women on base!
It sucked and the only women I saw were four fat chicks get out of a Ford Escort and the darn car shot up a foot. They got in and it sank like a lowrider. It seemed the base was filled with fat chicks in escorts.

This is spot on.
Our unit "encouraged" us on these schools but the only I had an opportunity was EFMB. at that point I decided I wanted to ETS.
Only the junior officers had airborne and air assault opportunities however
I regret that bc I know I could have passed

My former submarine's website posted pics from their Christmas party
The Navy wives were even worse than when I was there.
I'm glad to see the grotopotamus (Groton, CT combined with hippopotamus) population is still going strong.

How many attractive and smart 18 to 20yo women do you know that would be willing to get married at that age?
Military ppl think they're older than they actually are and push up the natural timelines of life events. Neglecting to realize they are still developing as adults
I made the same mistake at 20 but I will say my wife was also in the military and wore a size 4 throughout our 11 year failed marriage

The Army is 57% white, 21% African-American, 14% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 3% other.
The Marines are 65% white, 17% Hispanic, 10% African-American, and 4% Asian.
Not sure where you got your numbers. They are fairly similar.

When I went through Basic in the summer of 88 at Ft. Knox, the only females we saw the whole time was the little old Korean ladies who worked in the chow hall. I remember around about week 6 or 7 I started noticing how fine they were starting to look.

My buddy was married to an insufferable c unt. The type that liked to talk down to him and try to embarrass him if people were around. I would tell him (while she was sitting right there) that he should leave her bc she was a spoiled, stupid, annoying bitch that was going to do nothing more than drag him down and make him miserable for the rest of his life. Needless to say she hated me...
He did end up leaving her and a couple of years later met a really nice girl and now they're married and have a kid. From time to time he thanks me for be the voice of wisdom that led to him realizing how miserable he was with his ex.

We all need that one friend who is an unapologetic a-hole willing to spout the harsh truth. I'm glad that guy had you...

Nope, just the Friday before July 4th. We did have some awesome parties after spending a few weeks during a CPX in Tageu.

He's like a brother to me. He's been stationed in Hawaii for a while now and I went there to be in his wedding. That was the first time I met the girl he's married to now. When she first met me she said, "I heard all about you... and I guess I should thank you for making him leave his ex-wife".

Ain't that the fricking truth. You're never far from a group of people who will lay down the truth now matter how harsh or savage it can be.
