It is a US Model 1917 Plumb Bolo knife. It was carried by my great-great-uncle towards the end of the war. He got married right after volunteering for service. When he got outfitted he scribed or carved his and his new wife's initials on everything that he had. You can see their initials on the leather tip of the scabbard. It has a rawhide inner scabbard and a canvas and leather outer.

I need to try to find out more about his service, but I don't know where to start. I'm not close with his remaining family, really. He's on my Pop's side of the family. What I do know about him and the knife I learned from my dad.

Just thought it would be a cool one to share.

Some pics:

I have my peepaw’s WW1 bayonet, compass, and deployment paperwork.

He was in Wildcat Division and sent to Verdun, France in 1917.

Most folks my age have WW2 aged grandfathers.

Congratulations on the cool heirloom!

Your Low T problem was solved just by holding it.

Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Very very cool.

I think there's a guy that hangs out around here that might be willing to make you a great trade on that for box of vintage jockstraps.

If he was in combat I would say the probability is high. Does that look like blood on the back scabbard?

OP did your great great uncle live in Louisiana following the war? The Secretary of State has an archive with abstracts of his service if so.

Not a stabbing knife. That knife is a hacking knife. Has weight to it that when swinging, it can cut a hand or arm off.

The Philippine people made a shite load of them in WW2 and even after. They were made out of car lee springs. Had one when I was over there but lost it somewhere.

OP, one can buy one for around $25 for what you have. Still, cool knife.

Wow

My grandfather was born in 1888.
He had my father in 1929.
My father had me in his late 40s.

We effectively skipped a generation.
