Google recently made a huge announcement that could change the future of work and higher education: It's launching a selection of professional courses that teach candidates how to perform in-demand jobs.
These courses, which the company is calling Google Career Certificates, teach foundational skills that can help job-seekers immediately find employment. However, instead of taking years to finish like a traditional university degree, these courses are designed to be completed in about six months.
"College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn't need a college diploma to have economic security," writes Kent Walker, senior vice president of global affairs at Google. "We need new, accessible job-training solutions--from enhanced vocational programs to online education--to help America recover and rebuild."
Walker then revealed the following on Twitter:
"In our own hiring, we will now treat these new career certificates as the equivalent of a four-year degree for related roles."

Surprised it took this long for companies to dip into the education market.

Good, why waste time and money in College for a useless degree when you can get a Technical Certification in half the time or less and actually have a marketable skill.

I'm pretty pumped about this. Companies outsourcing "training" to colleges have had a lot of unintended consequences.

what? it seems like college degrees are more watered down than ever.

Good. Someone needed to disrupt the system. Please explain to me why someone getting a degree in economics needs two semesters in French? Just extra tuition is all it is
The same with all of the "core" courses, They are merely a repeat of what you took in high school and a waste of 2 years and money.

How does Google expect me to learn to haze my frat bros and do kegstands in those six months?

These days, Universities are nothing more than physical plants for marxist indoctrination.

That is fine and dandy but will these "career certificates" pass the HR screening?

I wonder what the pricing will look like.

If utilized correctly, and degree is in a STEM field etc I see value of college.
22 y.o. Privateer2007 would destroy 18 y.o. self.
I really sharpened critical thinking skills in undergrad and graduate school.
For some people this is a great option though.

Hopefully there's a reading comprehension certificate you can get.

It's an accelerated pledgeship.

It because universities, at their outset, were never intended to be a prerequisite to entering the job market.

because Economics is a degree and a degree is more than just what your major is. a degree is a sign of education, not training
hell, isn't Econ a BA in most/many colleges?

Very much dependent on the field. Even at present, some kind of bootcamp/certification in programming is just about equivalent to a CS degree.

that's only b/c of lowered standards in college, which is a direct effect of using college as an avenue of job training and not education
