re: Golfers who have broken 80: Was it easier to do after you broke the barrier?

The first time I broke 80 I shot a 78 in a weekly men's tournament where we played it down and putted everything out. I shot another 78 and a 79, but quit playing as much and have only gotten to the low 80's several times. The key to low scores is in the short game and saving par. If you can excel in chipping and putting and hit decent irons and drivers, you can get into the 70's regularly.

Just a matter of getting your swing to the point of allowing you to play that well. The actual progress from 80-72 for me was almost entirely shot selection and short game. Guys who hold a scratch handicap are far better putters than 95% of those above a 6.
For that reason, yeah I guess it does get easier. Because generally you can make a lot faster progress on the short game than you can your actual swing, that's how it is for me anyway.

It's short game when you are talking about having 7 strokes to waste. If anyone doubts this go to a local course and find the group of guys that are 80ish years old but still shoot 72-80. You may not see a single ball go 220 yards all day but they chip to inside 5 feet and make their putt for par. Now ask yourself how many people have you played with that just crush the ball but their scores are mid-high 80s.

Don't keep track of your score as it will always be in your head. You only want to worry about the next shot.
Set goals like:
- No double bogeys
- No 3 putts
- No penalty strokes

This is me to a fricking tee. My problem is my short game from 100 in is garbage and my putting is just a little better than that.

Is the barrier 100? Cause I haven't done that yet
