I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with hybrids. I hit them marginally better than driver off the tee.

How are you missing? Is it all over the place or mostly one sided?

right now it's mostly a push. Not a huge slice.

Just food for thought - I hit a two-iron straighter than a driver. Took several years of the same guy beating me each time we played to get this through my head. My two iron, off the tee, is easy to hit. Off the fairway, I would not recommend it other than to advanced golfers.

This is by no means a permanent fix, but it has helped me out a good bit. Your hips could be getting out in front too much. Try closing off your stance some. It will help your hands catch up and get around more square. It helped me out tremendously.

If it's OB, how far did it really go? The answer is zero plus lose a stroke.

Slow your swing down and regardless of how your swing is try to concentrate on squaring the club head to the ball at impact.

I hit the ball plenty far, I just have trouble hitting fairways. So I guess my question is, should I start practicing a "softer" swing? I've read some pros advise amateurs to worry about swinging hard first, then worry about accuracy later.

I am going to speak for myself since I have the same problem. Swinging softer will help you control the ball a lot more, because it's less likely that your swing will be out of control. I know it helps me. But I am so bad, I still hit the ball all over.

Two easy drills to stop your slice/push

Also, how long of a shaft does your driver have? Some drivers have 46 inch shafts. Many have trouble getting the club square. If that's you, consider cutting the shaft down an inch or two. Even going to 44' will feel so much more controllable.

Loosen the grip pressure on your driver while still making a complete swing. When most of us try to swing "easier", we don't complete the swing.

You shouldn't feel a lot of tension in your forearms during your swing. If you do, soften the grip on the club.

I picked up golf after baseball and my grip pressure was too strong for a golf swing. I would tend to push right as well, like I was hitting to right field on a hit and run.

I still get good distance now but a much straighter ball flight, even a draw. Golf is fun again.

Get some impact tape and go to the range. If you are pushing it, but hitting it in the middle of the face then you face position is open at impact. The other thing you may be doing is hitting it towards the inside of the face. If this is the case you are probably swinging outside in and dropping it over the top. If you are doing that the face could be square, but you aren't making precise contact. Knowing what is causing the push is going to help you actually fix the problem instead of trying to compensate for it.

yeah I played baseball growing up and likely do have too tight of a grip. Just an odd feeling not gripping tightly when swinging.

unless you are just arse off the drive, people are picking up their strokes on 2-7.

I have a similar situation. For some reason, I can't hit woods consistently. I've taken to hitting a 2 iron off the tee and fairway, and do much better.

Make sure your right elbow isn't flying out away from your body on your downswing. Letting that elbow out can delay your release by a smidge, especially if you have a flatter swing. You don't need to swing any softer, but sometimes you can lose your mechanics on a big swing.

Another thing, and it may sound counter productive is to open your clubface a little at address. I don't know why this helps me when I lose a few to the right, but maybe looking at an open clubface makes me emphasize getting it back to square at impact.

If you're losing it right and left, it's probably a tempo/timing issue with the bigger swing.

You could use ball with less spin. You'll lose some feel around the greens but you'll hit more fairways. Most hacks like myself have no business playing ProV1's.

my amateur advice: choke up a tad...or down haha...whichever makes the club shorter in length for you and keep your head behind the ball and the ball in line with your labia.

for me it all starts w/ alignment. if you're swinging toward the target and are just a little misaligned, your swing path is affected. for me, i tend to open up just a little and that makes me pull/hook it left. i close my stance and i get my natural draw. alignment is something you tend to take for granted but over time you can drift. can't work on a swing if you don't have that base alignment, because every swing is different w/ a different alignment. but that's just me...
