sounding an alarm at people working out too hard
Does this really happen?
Yes. From what I've been told by friends who work out there, the lunk alarm gets sounded on people dropping weights or grunting too loud.

After all this time people still respond to el Gaucho seriously.

I hear the lunk alarm go off quite a bit.

because Planet Fitness is more of a social hangout for overweight people than a real gym

I was fat shamed as a kid. It worked. I lost a bunch of weight and have never looked back.
Same here. My lifestyle is night and day compared to what I was as a kid. I'm pretty thankful for those comments from some people. It's also not that hard to lose weight as long as your mind is in it.
ETA: I've heard Planet fitness has pizza nights and shite like that. What a great way to shed those pounds.

The alarm is there. I've never seen it used. YouTube planet fitness. You'll see a ton of videos bitching about it. People being kicked out.
Work out too hard? They talk to you.
Woman in sports top? If you're fat no problem. Remotely in shape or god forbid hot? You'll be asked to put on a t-shirt.
There are videos of a guy who dresses like The Ultimate Warrior and goes into random PF's. He works out as you'd expect Ultimate Warrior to then is asked to leave. Videos usually last 2-3 minutes including him being walked out. Lol

sounding an alarm at people working out too hard
Is it used for people "working out too hard?" No.
It is called the Lunk Alarm, IIRC, and they set it off (depending on who's working behind the counter) when you've got some douchebag slamming weights and yelling like he's wildebeest in heat. You know the type.
The idea is that it isn't a gym for people who want to compare bicep measurements or brag about their six-pack abs; it is a place where the average joe can get in a workout before/after work.
The vast majority of people bitching about it are only doing so because they don't like having to workout with average people and because it has become the "in" thing to bitch about Planet Fitness (like bitching about them somehow shows that you are serious about your workout).
