The reason tbe "zipper" barrier got installed was because of the many head-on collision on the GGB. Previously, there were yellow reflective wands between the opposing traffic lanes that were moved to accommodate the daily lane shifts. They didn't do anything to physically stop a vehicle from crossing over into oncoming traffic.
To a previous poster:
The "Golden Gate" refers to the harbor entrance, particularly in tbe evening, not the color of the bridge.

There a quite a number of suicide prevention hotline signs posted at various locations on the GG Bridge.
Further, almost all suicides happen on the SF (east) side of the bridge

Thats because the pedestrian sidewalk is on tbe east side. You'd have to be REALLY suicidal to try to cross six lanes of traffic to jump off of the western side.

Incorrect. You can walk on either side. However, bikes are required to ride on the west side and it's not nearly as scenic. Perhaps at sunset though.

Re: suicide prevention
No joke ... There are a few dozen ironworkers and painters employed by the Golden Gate Bridge District. Those gguysgo through training to recognize pedestrian behaviors that look potentially suicidal. People out there alone, people lingering but not taking photos, people looking down at the water rather than the views, etc. The have radios tbey use to communicate at work and will notify police if they suspect someone is going to jump. They've also stopped suicides before. Obviously, since prevention isn't their primary responsibility, but it's pretty impressive how seriously most of them take it.

I don't live out there anymore, so it's possible foot traffic is allowed on tbe western side now. However, tbe reason foot and bike traffic got separated in tbe first place was because pedestrians were getting run down by bicyclists. It was considered to be safer to let the tourists wander around one side of the bridge, while the bicyclists used the other side and only had to worry about avoiding work crews.

Interesting to read that. But, since there are always quite a number of pedestrians, I'm sure it is not easy to look out for too many suiciders. Plus, i'd guess most suicides happen at night, when the painters aren't there. Just guessing on the night thing, though.

It's not their primary focus, but as it was explained to me by the Paint Superintendent, there are some similarities among many of the suicides and potential suicides that differ from the average tourist. Just being by yourself wouldn't necessarily set off any alarm bells, but lingering in one spot and staring at the water might cause some alarm. Especially at midspan.
There are cameras out there and have been for years. Apparently, some suicide victims spent long amounts of time contemplating jumping. The Bridge District, along w/ suicide prevention experts, used the camera footage to identify common behavior that indicated potential suicide risk.
Pedestrian access used to be closed between like maybe 10 at night to 6 in the morning (I don't remember the exact hours). I don't know if that was a suicide prevention measure or just a general security issue.

I like how the cars immediately cut back in front of the zipper car as if they are in some type of race.
Also, there was a documentary made on the GG suicides. Apparently, the filmmaker somehow fooled the people who run the bridge to allow him to set up cameras.
"The movie was shot with multiple cameras pointed at a notorious suicide spot on the bridge during 2004. It captured 19 people as they took their final plunge, and then offers interviews with grieving families."

Back in the mid-90s, they stopped publishing how many suicides had taken place. They were approaching 1,000 and there was concern that there may be a rash of suicides because of someone trying to be the milestone 1,000th suicide. I think they stopped at 997 or 998. There have been a shitload more over the past 20(+) years. I think it's estimated to be 1,500 or 1,600 now.
There was also a big push at that time to erect a suicide barrier. There were engineering concerns about wind loading, but the majority of the opposition was over aesthetic concerns. There was a mock-up of an unclimbable net fence by the bridge district's offices for a whilee, but it never came to fruition. There was also talk about erecting a horizontal net below the bridge deck and cantilevered out 10' or 15' to catch jumpers, similar to a construction fall protection safety net, but I don't know what ever became of that idea. Money, wind loads and aesthetics were among the usual concerns.

Took me about 2 minutes to figure out what the frick was going on in that pic. Pretty cool.
In Tucson they just have overhead signs telling you which hours you can use that lane. Nobody ever gets it correct so it is called the suicide lane.
A zipper looks much safer.
