Looking forward to some time away with the wife

doing 5 nights at an all inclusive adults only resort(paradisus le perla) about 5 minutes from downtown.

Neither of us have been in that region before so we are looking for any recommendations on things to do other than the obvious lounging around the resort/beach.

im interested in the Mayan ruins, zip lining, stuff like that.

Tulum ruins is beautiful. Don't go with a tour though because they hijack most of your time trying to sell you crap and then you only get like an hour to actually explore the grounds there.

Take ferry to Cozumel for the day. Rent a jeep in Cozumel and drive around the island. Do some snorkeling.

Xcaret

Google it. You can swim in an underground river, go snorkeling and other things in the park. It was a decent price last time I went. Well worth it.

Forgot about that place. I went there with my senior trip back in 1996. Saw they were still open.

But yeah...the underground river thing is cool. I remember there was a baby sea turtle thing there as well that was cool if you love turtles.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT fall for some people offering a free rental car or taxi or some shite. It's a timeshare bullshite thing that takes up your whole day. Do your own thing and ignore them.

Last time I was there was 2007. Not sure if it's changed much, but we had fun there for an entire day. It can get pricey pretty quick if you do a lot of the optional activities though.

Didnt stay at Playa Del Carmen, but just up the road at a resort.

Go to Tulum. Get a tour guide in the little square next to the tram when you get there. It was pretty cheap for a group of us and the guy was friendly and helpful. Short tour but he didn't push us on anything. Just a tour guide.

zip lining, stuff like that.

We did Xplor. Its owned by the same people as Xcaret but it was a little more our style than Xcaret from what we saw online. Lots of ziplining and some kind of fun driving trails, etc. We enjoyed it.

As previously mentioned:

Tulum
Xcaret

Couple of others:
Xel-Ha (Which I personally think is cooler than Xcaret)

If you're looking to go off property:
Dirty Martini Bar (Ladies night either Mon. or Tues. I think)
Blue Parrot Bar (Nice chill spot)

You can get massages on Avenida 5 for $35 or so, and they surprisingly aren't bad. Don't pay spa prices at resort.

5th avenue is cool as well to walk around

DON'T let the guy with the cute monkey come up and put the monkey on you and take pictures. It's a scam. They will give you some story about raising money for some nature thing.

I gave in because I wanted pics of the adorable monkey on my shoulder. Guy then puts monkey on my husband(without his permission) and tries to charge double the amount because of it. I had to physically pull my husband away cause I thought he was going to get into an altercation with the monkey guy.

I still got pics with a cute monkey so I was happy, my husband...not so much.

We used Riviera Adventours last year. Swam with sea turtles, swam the undergeround cenotes, had lunch at Oscar y Lalo's, zip lined, and cliff jumped into a crystal clear lagoon. It was a blast. I highly recommend them. LINK

This is where I had the most fun during our trip. Crazy to see machine gun wielding federales on every other street corner though.

Loved this place. Kind of freaked me out in the underground portion, though, because it seemed so eerie. They have people swimming much deeper underwater for safety purposes (or they did 13 years ago), and it scared the shite out of me.

Exaggerate much? I'm on a street corner on fifth street right now and not a machine gun in sight. Sure the cops probably advertise their presence a little leaving their cops lights on 24/7 while patrolling, but there certainly arent many cops wielding machine guns running around either.
