there have been multiple threads about this with good info. 1st thing you should do is buy the Maui travel book. its comprehensive, up to date and has great info about everything. it was invaluable.

Second...here are some things I did there...we were there for almost two weeks and stayed in three different parts of the island (Wilea, North Shore0-Peaea, and Kapalua)...

Golf---Played Wilea, the Dunes, Makena and Kapalua Plantation course

-Sunset sailing trip
-Surf lessons and surfing near Lahaina
-Mt. Haleakala at sunrise and then hike down into volcano
-two separate snorkeling trips including Moloaki
-Shopping, walking around in Lahaina
-Road to Hana and various vistas and natural waterfalls/parks on the way
-Dinner at Mama's fish house on North Shore
-beach time
--running near the beach/coast line
--Maui brewing brew pub near Kapalua
--Grand Wilea Luau.

If you have a group of 4 I would look into renting a condo. there are some really nice ones there and we ended up getting a great deal (depends on the time of year)...We had basically a 2,800 sf house on Kapalua with private patio, ocean views, full kitchen, garage, access to private pools, etc... for $300 a night.

Love Maui. Spent 9 days on Maui for our honeymoon.

We stayed in Lahaina which was wonderful. Great little downtown with art galleries and bars right on the ocean.

Without a doubt take an entire day to do the Hana Road, and if you can spend a couple of night in Hana. We stayed at a private home called the Sunrise House, a Japanese style home with sliding walls that open the entire house to the outside. Geckos climb on the screen porch in the evening and chirp like birds. It rain in Hana most mornings which is nice because the bedroom is essentially the screened porch which means that you are sleeping outside with the benefit of shelter. Wonderful place.

While in Hana, visit the 7 Sacred Pools, a series of waterfalls that cascade down the volcano into swimming pools and continue all the way down into the ocean.

More than anything, purchase the book "Maui Revealed". The locals hate this book because it publishes true island secrets and unlike normal travel guides this book does not allow businesses to pay to be in the book. The publisher pays employees to live a couple of years in Maui (or any other island) to learn the local secrets such as where the hidden waterfalls and beaches are located. The best restaurants. Best time of day to drive on the highways to avoid rush hour. Best local joints. Best adventures on the island. Best time to do the volcano bike tour.

Make sure to snorkel at Turtle Town. Turtle Town is located about 200 yards from Tiger Woods' vacation home. Sea turtles come out of underwater caves to play with you. Wonderful experience.

Snorkel at Molokini, a nearly submerged extinct volcano. You swim inside the volcano rim.

Actually I think this is the perfect time. And you definitely need to try to see some whales.

Haleakala is pretty amazing to see. We didn't do the sunrise deal though.

I went in November. I highly recommend scuba diving. Best thing we did out there. There is a lavender field that is nice if they are blooming. Wake up early one morning and watch the sun rise over the valcano.

What part of maui are you staying?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I know for sure we are going to Mamma's Fish house. As for the rest it's all up in the air.

Head to Makena Beach State Park or "Big Beach". The best beach on the island and if you are more adventurous head over to "little beach"

I'll second the Maui Revealed book. Excellent book, and they have them for other islands too (at least they did for Oahu when I went).

Okay, see that red rock cliff in the first image of Big Beach where the beach ends? Walk to that cliff, and look to the right (away from the ocean). There will be a trail between the cliffs that will take you up and over the cliff and lead you thru the forest to a hidden nude beach. You can actually see the hidden nude beach just beyond the cliff.

However, that nude beach is overrated. When my wife and I went there, it was about 70 percent nude men age 50+ and the few women that were there were 50+ with saggy boobs and overly tanned skin that looked like leather. We stayed about 15 minutes and then went back to Big Beach.

There used to be a wonderful roadside grill called The Makena Grill located just beyond Big Beach. Great food, a local secret. However, a few years ago Maui shut her down because of permit issues and she relocated to Arizona.

Sucks.

Yup...I haven't been to Maui in 15 years but that's what I seem to remember.

We were just in Kauai and The Big Island over this past Christmas and am ready to go back...

I lived on Oahu my whole childhood (3-13). I also do missions over there every summer. Maui is my favorite island by far. I would type a wall of text but someone's already covered that. Have fun...

Just a tip... Be respectful to the land and locals (obviously). A lot of the locals are kind, but there are hostile racists in Hawaii that hate haole tourists. Especially the more local islands like Maui, Kauai, Molokai, etc..
Pacific islands are some of the most beautiful places on earth. Enjoy it and don't take it for granted
