GOES-R satellite scheduled to launch today

Claims to be a big deal in weather forecasting

The instrument will collect three times more information with four times better resolution, and produce the images five times faster.

Like going from black and white tv to HDTV

We now get storm updates every 5 minutes. Now, they claim updates will be available every 50 seconds.

This is going to be awesome! However, it will be months before it is fully operational and data is available to the public. Hopefully, everything goes smoothly and it is up and running for next spring.

I was able to participate in some testing this past spring. We had one min rapid scan satellite and one min rapid scan radar for certain areas. In the field, you could watch thunderstorms go up and at the same time see the radar and sat rapid scans. It was really cool.

It was fun watching the launch on TV. Wish I were there in person to see it.
