I just checked and all my texts between sister and I are on this new to me phone… including pictures!
So a new phone in the same manufacturer lineup will transfer. Of course jumping to another company product line will probably not work.
And yes, I have no need nor desire to stay cutting edge with most every category of products. I save a ton of money NOT being an Early Adopter and letting others be the Guinea pigs and not just free testers but actually paying to test products for manufacturers. I still buy according to the actual name of the product and not for the additional attributes. Like I buy a phone based on telephone stuff not on the ability to surf the web nor text. I have a PC for non phone digital stuff.

Under “show all” make sure messages is toggled on.
Like toof said, if your iOS is up to date everything in your old phone will transfer to your new phone during the setup process. I just did this like 3 weeks ago and didn’t lose anything
