A great case during a short period of time when it was customary that the SCOTUS actually told the executive branch to go frick itself when it came to intrusive federal regulations.
The case answered whether people could actually choose which chickens they wanted to be killed to eat at a slaughterhouse :
Among the eighteen charges against Schechter Poultry were "the sale to a butcher of an unfit chicken" and the sale of two uninspected chickens.
“Ten charges were for violating codes requiring "straight killing." Straight killing prohibited customers from selecting the chickens they wanted; instead a customer had to place his hand in the coop and select the first chicken that came to hand. There was laughter during oral arguments when Justice Sutherland asked, "Well suppose however that all the chickens have gone over to one end of the coop?" LINK
