I read on Youtube that certain 5.3L engines in a GMC/Chevrolet 1500 pickup are susceptible to failure because of the Direct Fuel Management System. Anyone have experience with this?

there is infinity information on this on the internet.

the answer is yes they are. you can buy a hundred dollar plug in device that will give you peace of mind but not actually do anything, or you can spend ten grand to fix the actual problem, or you can just buy the warranty and trade it in before it expires.

Yes. It sucks.

DFM differs from AFM because the same 4 cylinders would shut off in AFM and it caused lifter issues. DFM can shut down any cylinders down to I believe two cylinders. Driving in hills it is a pain in the arse because you will start going up an incline and have to really mash the skinny pedal to get all eight cylinders going to move the massive piece of shite vehicle.

My 2018 5.3 has the AFM and approaching 140k miles with no issues. I had my mechanic quote the full delete and it was around $6-7k and I’ve heard the plug in device ($200) helps but doesn’t completely solve the issue since the lifters are still in there.

I’ve also read on GM forums that tightening the oil change intervals to 5k~ miles helps a lot since the lifters operate better with clean oil and that’s what I’ve been doing.

Really is a shame because the 5.3 pre 2007 didn’t have these systems and was a very reliable and durable engine capable of lasting for a long time.

You can get them fixed for under 2k at the right shops. Its just a lifter failure.
