They both were.
They actually 'formed' the Breeders when they were teenagers. After Kim was bounced from the Pixies she started the Breeders to recognize what her and Kelley had done. Kelley came on board a little while after they got going.
Another rocker-chick was in that band as well, Tanya Donelly, who went on to start Belly.

That's right. All coming back now. I saw Kim in some other band called the amps (think it was her) with the foo fighters at the state palace in spring of 96 I think. I was only a freshman and thought they sounded awesome although grohl repeatedly stated in interviews that they partied too hard the day before and it was considered their worst show as a band.

Yes, that was Kim. Interestingly, after the Pixies broke up in the early 90's, the Foo Fighters offered their drumming gig to the drummer for the Pixies - he turned it down. Bad choice...
