You get pulled over for a traffic stop. Cop walks over and "smells marijuana". You get out and he searches your car. In the process of searching he finds $100 in your wallet,a diamond engagement on your wife's finger, and gold rings and other expensive jewelry on your person.

He then says, "I believe you are wearing the proceeds of drug transactions and that you're a drug dealer. I am placing you under arrest for money laundering and possession of stolen items."

He then gives you a reprieve, and offers to drop all charges if you don't dispute that the above possessions were the proceeds of an illegal transaction. The result of course is that you lose your car, engagement rings, and all goods on you. Or you go to jail and fight it out through court.

I think he's too naive to see how dangerous it is to allow the government to just claim goods from people without a conviction.

Batter in New Mexico is defined as the "intentional touching or application of force to another person that is done in a rude, insolent, or angry manner"
