Just doing some googling around, apparently, orchestral musicians can make into six figures. It's hard to find good sources on this, but some sites seemed to claim that the Chicago Orchestra is the highest paying and pays their musicians an average of around $130k. Then again this seems to imply that you need to be among the very best in the world at what you do to make it to that level. I guess like all things art you have to do it because you love it, and if you end up making money off of it then it's a huge part luck combined with tremendous hard work.

Article says the teacher takes 1 or 2 students per year and that 80% of clarinetists in North America studied under him. So there’s like 60 clarinetists in all North American orchestras combined?

Three different girls for sure.

I can’t tell, they all look the same in the pictures

The third pic is definitely a different person. She isn't asian. The other pics are too low quality to tell. You can only tell that all of the others are an asian girl.

If you are a skilled musician who plays an orchestra instrument, landing a job as a member of a major American orchestra, such as the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra or the New York Philharmonic, can be a dream job come true. Working conditions are good, especially in orchestras led by conductors the musicians like and respect. Major orchestra salaries range by the orchestra from a little over $100,000 to a little over $150,000. Principals, the ranking member of each orchestra section, can make a great deal more, in some instances more than $400,000. And most major orchestras play for a season lasting only about nine- months a year.
If this guy got selected for this particular understudy he’s probably pretty talented. It’s not a guarantee but it’s important if he’s pursuing the top of his profession.

I read it as he takes 1-2 under his scholarship wing a year. Not students total
