Getting a Chocolate Lab. Any help with underground fencing

Don’t want to use a pen. Want to let it roam free in yard. Use of a shock fence would help that but what if I want to take the dog out. Ride with me in truck or boating? Will he be hesitant to come out or will it cause more trouble? Want be able to roam free but also take out when wanting to. Any other suggestions.

I would’ve built a fence before I got a lab

It's not a problem with my two dogs or with my father's lab, as we both have hidden fences on our property. I change the collars out from the yard collar to their regular collars when I take them places.
Dogs are pretty sharp animals and they will pick up on it quickly. Mine know they are going places when I break out the two regular collars and they get excited.
This is the system I purchased: Stubborn Dog Fence System.
I then bought this wire as it is a better gauge than what would normally come with a full system: Extreme Dog Fence Wire

Depends on the dog. I installed an underground fence around my entire yard, in August. Bitch of a job. Worked for a couple of years, and then my mutt realized he could run through it, take a shock and enjoy freedom.
He's restricted to the fenced-in backyard now.

I guess you don’t have an actual fence on your property?

A chocolate lab? Who are you, Willy Wonka?

Pet Safe makes a wireless shock collar system. It sets a 360 degree radius from a transmitter inside your house. You can adjust it to cover a pretty big area. We've used one for our Golden Retriever for the last few years and it works great. Seems like the system ran us a little over $300.

I had a underground fence in my backyard. As another poster said my dog learned he could haul tail across it and get loose.

Had a black and chocolate lab.
Install underground fence but as others have said they realize they can cross it.
Eventually fenced in back yard, +/- 1/2 acre, they had room to run around.
Two things to remember.
Don’t leave the shock collar on for weeks at a time, they will cause irritation.
If you’re getting a puppy, pick up every and anything that is chewable.

I have a mutt that has always been a huge flight risk so I got an invisible fence to put a stop to it. After I got it I decided I wanted a collar that worked with a remote too so I could stop him from jumping and barking at the door when people came to the front door.
Before putting the fence in I tried just using the remote to stop him from running off. It took all of 15 minutes for the dog to learn to stick close. A year later he doesn’t even think about running off whether he has the collar on or not and that electric fence is still sitting in the box.
You want a SportDOG fence brand new?

Exactly the same story with my uncle's Jack Russel.

We had a Chocolate Lab for 12 years. He could climb fences and dig like a backhoe. Loved to go for a boat ride.

Why a chocolate? They're dumb as rocks compared to yellow or black labs, hope you don't plan on hunting with it

What an uninformed statement.

IF you do get one the easiest way I have found to install it is with an edger. Just cut a line along where you want it to go, lay the wire in just below the grass, and step along both sides of the cut to close the grass back over it. You can drizzle some sand along the top of the cut if you like.

I have a chocolate and she's highly intelligent. Except when she eats socks. And baby wipes and batteries.
She found a way to get her shock collar off, dug a hole and burried it in a flowerbed. She gives 0 shits about getting shocked.
