I give joes right out of AIT a pass because for most it's just a phase and if nothing else they are proud.
Nothing is worse than retirees who can't let go or the former E4 / E5 who did their minimum commitment then spend the rest of their lives being professional veterans.

That’s 99% of the force, of all ranks who can’t let go of their service no matter how many years served. Getting told how brave and courageous you are everyday, coupled with the fact that being a leader in the army is synonymous with overconfident A type personalities, you get folks like the retired General in OP and you get folks talking shite about him being “out of reg” like anyone actually cares.
