One of my GFs was a CIC guard for General Washington.
One of my GFs was both a Confederate and a Union soldier.
My surname GF arrived in America in 1650. He fought on the side of the crown in the English Civil war and was captured at the Battle of Dunbar. He was sent to America as an indentured servent.
Two of my GFs were Rev War vets who were granted land at Wofford Station in North Ga in 1790.
My great uncle x4 is Francis Scott Key.

My grandparents used to breed Dobermans. They sold one to Houston Nutt's parents when HDN was still a kid.

Which part of Alsace-Lorraine were they from? My paternal grandfather's kin came from the Bouxwiller, Ingwiller, and Strasbourg areas of Alsace-Lorraine.
I believe it was Mulhouse, but I can't remember exactly where. I'd have to look it up again.
ETA: Just looked it up. The farthest back I can trace it is Upper Rhine River Valley, Palatinate, Germany in ~1600. From there they lived in Mulhouse, and then in Rhein Palatinate, before moving to America.

I always assumed that I was of Acadian descent.
When I traced my 4 family name histories, 3 came straight from France around 1650, and the other came from the Canary Islands around the same time.

One of my great grandfathers some number back was Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
That's awesome. Was your family left out of the will?
This scene from The Patriot was at Arthur Middleton's estate.

A LOT of "Cajun" folks will find this out if they look hard enough. They might have a Cajun grandparent, depending on the family names and where they live. There were A MILLION people in the area comprising the Louisiana Purchase, mostly directly from France and never spent time in Canada. The total expulsion was less than 15k and not all of those made it to Louisiana.
The French names in New Orleans and other enclaves, like Natchitoches, are largely not Acadian at all - in any way. Creole at best.

One of my direct ancestors was hanged for having sex with a sheep (my S/O asked if the sheep was also hanged). He was turned in by his wife and son.

Found out a great^5 grandfather was a surveyor was the Spanish King in Louisiana, where after he was granted land by the Spanish Crown in South Louisiana. I found the original surveys at the New Orleans Historic Collection and are getting copies framed for my house.
Another was a French Infantry Officer from Marseille & member of a noble family that emigrated to Louisiana and got married in the 1700s at St Louis Cathedral. He was a member of a couple of European Chivalric orders which made his genealogy super interesting.
Another was a plantation owner along the Miss. River who was ruined after the civil war, but fought for the Union in 1812.
Lastly, I found out another was a police officer killed in the line of duty im Mississippi around the turn of the century. I found 20+ articles in a newspaper describing the arrest, arraignment, conviction, and hanging of the perp, along with the funeral and honors of the deceased officer.
Louisiana has tons of history if you look back far enough.

Sounds like he made a bad trade, or probably made money off being a traitor to his people, and lots of other native tribes.
quote:
Choctaw Chief. Chief of the Apuckshunubbi District, one of three independently governing districts of the Choctaw Nation. In 1830, as a subordinate chief in the Choctaw Nation, he was a signer of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. This treaty ceded 11 million acres of the Choctaw Nation in Mississippi in exchange for payment and 15 million acres in the eastern section of present day Oklahoma. It was the first removal treaty enacted and acted upon after the Indian Removal Act of 1830. He was enlisted by the United States government to serve as captain and lead the Choctaws from Mississippi to Oklahoma. He made repeated trips for this purpose. Choctaw removal became the model for the Seminole, Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee Indian removals that followed and would always be referred to as the Trail of Tears.

Fontainebleau sugar mill and brickyard was owned by my ancestors. All their books I owned were lost in the flood last year, and the only perk I have is that I get in the park for free.

It was going to happen regardless. Andrew Jackson was a shitty human being. Fletcher made the best of a bad situation for his people.
