They were just trying to make up for the fact that the bartenders/waitresses wouldn't be getting any tips.

Do I think racial discrimination factors in at what goes on at the door here? Yes.

But 3 overweight guys in their 40s with no chicks being asked to pay a $20 cover is not the proper example

I was going to post something similar. This isn't a myth, most black people don't tip. I've heard that from several black waitresses...they hate waiting on black people for that reason.

Yelp has turned off the rating for Gaslamp, obviously due to the backlash.

What happened with the guys in the OP doesn't seem like an isolated incident...looks like minorities have had a problems there previously. Here are a few reviews from the past:

quote:

May 2015:

Wow. My jaw is seriously dropped that so many people have experienced this. I was too pissed off to ever write my review and looking at all the others, it's probably going to sound redundant. I was hanging out with my friend Peter and we decided to meet some of his friends here. They got in, no problem. Peter is Asian, I'm Mexican. The bouncer decided to charge us $20 each. We looked at each other, then him and pointed out how so many other people had gone in unbothered. He said yeah, but you guys have to pay $20 each. I'm obviously oblivious because at first it didn't click. I thought it was because we were guys walking in without girls, but plenty of guys were walking in for free. White guys. Then we saw him tell a couple of middle eastern girls to wait, I guess to charge them after us. Not cool at all. frick this place. Excuse the language.

quote:

April 2015:

My first one star review. Who knew it would be to a bar? Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I am surprised this place still can do business the way they do. Is it not messed up they can target people to pay a cover and others not? I was one of those who sadly had to pay a $10 cover, but my friends did not. I have heard from my Houston friends they also turn many people away for their "shoe attire". I am sorry, what is this?

quote:

August 2015:

If you are black with athletic shoes... They will turn you away...but if you are not black with Nike or anyother athletic shoe...you can obviously go in... I guess skin color still does matter...

quote:

August 2015:

Extremely racist establishment. Me, my wife and 2 other couples went to this place and were asked for a $10 entry. All of us are brown skinned. A bunch of white people entered before and after us and were not asked for any money. This place should be closed down because of racial profiling...

You're full of shite. We have black posters on here that have started threads about their problem with tipping. This isn't open for debate.

I can tell you for a fact that if you're not an athlete, you better fit a certain demographic or else you're not getting into certain TigerLand bars. Those rules they have posted at the door aren't looked at until they need a reason to deny someone. The exception to this is Reggie's, because they don't discriminate between trash of different colors.

I have both waited tables and delivered food in my life. There are easily the same number quantity wise of white people who didn't tip or were shitty tippers. But the percentage of black customers who didn't tip was definitely noticable. I'm not stupid enough to think that every black person is going to stiff a waitress, but the stereotype did not make itself up. Same goes for smoking sections back when they existed. Very noticeable tip difference.

Bull fricking shite.

If there is one constant in the service industry its that black people are HORRIBLE tippers.

The 5% that do tip don't make up for the other %95

Stereotypes exist for a reason. You must have worked in the service industry.

There's nothing like actual experience for these "stereotypes" to become all too real.

I did a little unscientific experiment once over a two week period.

%100 of Asians tipped (and tipped above and beyond expected)
%90 of Hispanics tipped (also tipped well)
%75 of whites tipped (some well some not so well)
%5 of blacks tipped

I mean its soooooo drastic that it can't be denied.

Jehovahs for Sunday lunch? Did they make their own lemonade?

Surprising. I deal with them every day and they think it is all a negotiation.

Sutherland also said the men were charged a cover because they were attempting to go to one of the upper floors where a cover is always required to everyone except VIP members.

Only a matter of time before someone else complains about Cle too. Houston isn't used to having places with strict doors.

Selling food and drink isn't the same as what I do. So, I can see why.
