Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the stations themselves make much on the sale of fuel.
It's more of a way to get people to stop and shop in the store.

they don’t. couple cents of every gallon. they make their profits off of what they sell inside the gas station. that’s why the O&G companies sold the stations to individual owners.
