So when I push the button the garage door starts to go up about 2 feet and then gets stuck and makes a God awful noise.

When I pull the manual release it goes up and down without any problems.

Any handymen/garage door repairmen out there know what could be causing it to jam up when it's opened remotely?

Where's the noise coming from?

Finding the location of the button has always been a challenge.

What model are we discussing?

It sounds like the noise is coming from the little central rail that the door slides on that runs to the motor. It doesn't make the noise until it gets stuck though. It goes up normally 2-3 feet but when it gets stuck is when the noise starts.

Is anything blocking the track?

Lubricated well?

Django beat me to it. Lubricate the chain the motor drives to pull the door up. The sound you hear is the motor locking up because the chain is sticking.

Automatic Garage Doors are very subtle creatures. Issues with them are better left to the experts.

I handle a bunch of home projects myself, I call a Garage Door contractor for Garage Door issues.

It's a 1/2 Horsepower Genie Screw Drive. Looks pretty old.

It goes down remotely without any issues and up manually the same, could lubrication still be a problem?

How much does an average GDO repair typically run?

Screw drives suck. Mine started doing this and no matter how much lube i put on them it would start back after a week.

Get a belt drive. 5-6 years ago they were about 200-300 at lowes.

Are these things simple to install for a very average handyman or would it be wise to let a professional do it?

I installed 2 of them in about 3 hours. That included taking the old ones down.

I think they are genie whisper drive with battery backup.

Garage doors can maim you in a blink of an eye.

I had a roller come out of the track. It looked like all I needed to do was take out two bolts and put the roller back in the track. Didn't notice those bolts held the cable attached to the spring. When that second bolt was loose holy bolt sling shot from hell. Could of lost an eye

You don't have to mess with the cable or spring when you change the opener.

So if it's a lubrication problem will changing the opener help? Won't the chain still be the same?

You wont have a screw drive or the same track the screw is in. It's a cogged belt with a new track. I put a pack of lube that came with it when i installed them and have not had to add any since.

Do a quick check to make sure one of your springs hasn't popped. Mine had same symptoms last year and it was a broken spring. Real easy to see before you spend a lot of money with the other fixes.
