The point is that most people that live in Houston proper don't have an Hour commute. Unless you are truly traveling to other arse ends of town.

If you are paying what you do in Lakeview 500k and working downtown, you aren't dealing with that.

A 750k house in New Orleans would cost 250k in most cities in the south

Even Uptown housing prices are usually between $250-350 sq/ft, depending where you are looking (Magazine vs Freret, etc...).

A 750k house in New Orleans is probably a 375k house in Lafayette (or a similar city).

Obviously, if you're buying some home in rural Louisiana, you may be able to get it for $100 sq/ft, but I doubt it will be as nice as the 750k that you would get in New Orleans.

It is a tough market with insane real estate pricing. Think how hard it is for the working poor.

This is what I don't understand. We hear all the time about how the city doesn't have enough professional jobs, and about how we have so many working poor.

Who, then, is renting and buying and driving up the prices so high?

Correct. I saw a story on curbed.nola.com a few weeks back where they showed the cheapest residential properties for sale in different neighborhoods and it was something like $680k for a shithole in the Lower Garden District that needed 200k in renovations.

People with money. The anti NO crowd doesnt like this but its true. The white collar environment is not nearly as bad as you think. Fortune 100 companies? hardly any but tons of medical, legal and small start up IT stuff.

The numbers posted in the OP article say that it's pretty pisspoor.

tons of medical

That are making 13% less than the national average.

small start up IT stuff.

And they're making 14-19% less.

As a CPA in internal audit, NOLA is pretty horrific. What does this state have, 1 fortune 500? There are no real large business areas that start and develop or reside here compared to other cities

Look, I live here and do well and absolutely hate this city Here is why

Dirty and not pretty to me at all(some like the charm, this is a personal opinion)

Crime ridden

Schools are horrendous

Even the suburbs have poor schools

The suburbs are run down older houses that are still not cheap

The job market for CPAs in the private sector is not great

I cant stand the local govt

Those are legit reasons I hate it

Breaks my heart that the city of my birth has truly sunk to such depths. But it has. Took me moving away and years of living away in 4 separate states to see this, and finally admit it. I love my memories of NOLA, but that place is long dead.

Those Fortune 500 companies hire tons of entry-level grads each year. Because we don't have that... those grads go to other states.

I think you have a lot of people coming here from the north and west with daddy's money. So they can afford to get paid crap wages and work for a non-profit or a startup. But then eventually daddy cuts them off... and then what?

I think alot of people who are from NOLA and lived here there entire life that love it, would have an eye opening experience if they moved. They would see just why the city blows

I know I am being harsh but living in Nashville for two years, you realize that the city really is just pretty horrible
