To comfortably afford a 400k plus home while having multiple kids in private school you are going to need 250k household income

How easy is it to make $175k per year as a household?
I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's attainable if you are both educated.

why is it that the city makes an average of $39k If it is so easy?
Do you really want to compare yourself to the 'average' person in New Orleans?

That kinda money probably puts you in the top 3% or maybe even higher.

I feel like you should be able to afford a 400k house and 1 kid in private school on 175k income.

But, I also don't see the need to drive a new car every couple years.

You're right and it's crazy because I see people in this city that live in $600k-$1mm+ homes with multiple kids in private schools with incomes which can't be any more than $300k-$400k.

Right now I have an opportunity to get a considerable raise just under 6 figures for the first time ever and I'm debating leaving it on the table because I don't feel like temporarily relocating to Houston.... being single with zero kids, you can live pretty damn good in Nola on peanuts

Take it, New Orleans isn't going anywhere and you can always move back later.

Yep, you still see this when you meet someone else from Nola in another place. They always ask the same question "What school did you go to?"

You can do a lot more in Houston with that much.

Hmm using my numbers when I owned a home Uptown from 2014-2016 I don't agree with your definition of stretched thin.

The home was purchased for 325k at 1600 sq ft though.

If a family of 4 is stretched thin making 175k then the wife is hiding money on the side.

If you can't afford to put down 20% and are shelling out money every month on PMI then you are living outside of your means. That is why the mortgage companies require you to pay this extra insurance because they know there's a better chance that they will lose money on the loan.

You compare yourself to the average that way you can understand what the majority of the city is going through. I live in Lakeview and realize that my neighbors and I don't have the same struggles as the vast majority of our city.

Yeah the history is interesting and sad for New Orleans.

Nola's insular ruling elite, who view anyone as an outsider whose grandparents didn't grow up in the right neighborhood or go to the right schools.

Yep, you still see this when you meet someone else from Nola in another place. They always ask the same question

"What school did you go to?"

And then they automatically put you in a category from your answer. It's permeated into the culture.

While that is certainly inevitable, i think you all are exaggerating the influence of that 'ruling elite.' That said elite couldn't keep Landrieu from bulldozing through them and removing the statues. It may be hard to break into the uptown society if you are an outsider with no connections, but that's not keeping people from moving to Nola. There has definitely been a big uptick in college graduates and younger professionals relocating to nola post-K to work in things like education and the tech/entrepreneurial sphere (although the latter is nowhere close to strong as the city hypes it to be). Most of them couldnt give two shits about that insularity. The city has a lot more to offer socially, recreationally, culturally etc than it did before the storm. So yea while that social set may exist, the city is expanding well beyond uptown. If anything is inhibiting more economic progress it is city hall corruption and cronyism, as well as crime, schools etc that keeps companies away.
