This is from an article in 2014.

David Mendell, a freelance writer and former reporter for the Chicago Tribune, coaches Oak Park Youth Baseball outside Chicago. The shortstop ranged nimbly to his right, scooped up a sharp grounder and unleashed a strong throw to first base. Seeing the athletic play by my son, a burly fellow leaned against the chain-link fence. “You’ve got a nice little ballplayer there,” the man, Mike Adams, told me. “You should think about getting him into a full-time travel program. The sooner, the better.” I was a neophyte in the byzantine world of youth baseball, and Adams’s husky voice carried the resonance of a father who had logged many hours behind caged dugouts. Yet I had to chuckle. “Mike,” I said, “Nate’s just 9. Full-time travel baseball, really?”

My son’s teammate is named Seamus. That’s legit. It just sounds like a few bodily fluids and parts mixed up.

Yep. Case in point.

Unfortunately, this trend will only get worse. The local leagues can not compete with the facilities that they are rolling out these days. These kids are already playing too much baseball imo. The amount of arm/shoulder surgeries in these young kids is super alarming.

I am glad I let my kids play multiple sports. We played Travel ball but he also played football and soccer.

They have the Gulfport Sportsplex when they were young? All they need is some football fields out there to complete the season place.

Everyone on both of my kids' teams is very cognizant of over doing it with these young kids. There are a lot of teams here in Houston who are year round, balls to the wall baseball all of the time. Pretty much every kid on both of our teams plays multiple sports. Mine play select baseball, football, and basketball and the other plays select baseball, soccer, and basketball. I refuse to pigeon hole my kids into one sport until high school if that's what they want, but I will encourage them to play as many sports as possible no matter their age. If kids only do one sport, they get burned out on it. They will be active no matter what whether they like it or not. If you don't want to play this sport, you better find something else to do during that season.

Yes and they use the soccer fields as football fields. Both of my kids played on the soccer fields there and my son played lots of baseball their

To start with, I'm not sure there has been an 8U world series for a real long time. Secondly, there have been a ton of MLB players play on tv in the little league world series and that is just one of the 100+ 12U leagues that take it a little too far. But I do see where you're trying to go.

Because travel ball parents are a special lot. It's like the little league dad who tries way too hard to live vicariously through his son, but on steroids.
1. The local Dixie league here has ALOT more bad behavior than I have ever witnessed at travel tournaments.
2. To the point of the OP, I have never heard a reference to their son play major league baseball as a goal, hell, I have never heard about college scholarships.
3. Travel dads are a pretty benign bunch, we just want to go to parks that have a place to set up the tent and dont check the icechests.

Oh yeah ? Never heard of them. We have to come to those Traction fields for a couple tournaments a year. Some of those teams in BR are pretty salty.
