I give these 3-4 more years on the market. The Jeep dealership has had the same 2 sitting on the lot for like 6 months now. Ridiculously overpriced.

How the frick do people with 4 kids afford a full size suv at 100k?
We make the kids fight to see who gets to eat that day
Builds character, saves money

I second buying a used Ford Excursion diesel. It was a beast. Had one for years while children were at home. Could carry 7 - 8 comfortably and all the gear. Not as cool as the newer rides but was perfect for us.

Just get whatever the other women in the carpool line have. Thats usually how it goes.

Stay away from Expedition 10 speed. Transmission problems since I got it. Stay away from any All Star dealership. They will sell ya a lemon and take no responsibility for it.

Keep pushing minivan. It's too versatile for you to back down. It's ok to be right!

4 kids equals minivan. Sorry but you could have pulled out.
Otherwise the best deal going in a large suv is a used qx80/armada. Proven reliable engine and transmission. Zero fricks given about gas mileage.

You can still get an Armada with a naturally aspirated V8. This is the last year of production so it’s basically “while supplies last.” The 5.6L is one of the toughest engines currently available on a new truck.
Side note: I have experience with Tahoes and they were complete trash. Always in the shop.

Armada is a nice truck, probably the most reliable large suv.

This is exactly why we chose the Armada. No active fuel management system or anything of the sort. Just a big NA V8 with 400 HP on tap. Interstate mileage is decent, too.

Look into the Sequoia too.
If there were a Sequoia XL, Toyota would take over the market. But there isn't. 3rd row, no cargo space.

Get something with rear wheel drive and a steel frame if you love your family. Big and stiff will win in a crash.

That is highly dependent on the particular crash. Large vehicles do not handle or stop as well as lighter vehicles so avoiding accidents is harder in a heavy vehicle. I am not suggesting any modern vehicles don't have adequate crumple zones but the stiffer the frame the more energy is transferred to the passengers. Would you rather run into a concrete wall or a styrofoam wall?

rear wheel drive
RWD vehicles are harder to control near the limits especially for someone that is not capable of holding an arse out slide just with muscle memory (99.9% of the driving public). FWD and AWD are generally better options for emergency control than RWD. Both will "generally" be more biased toward understeer than oversteer. Understeer is easier for most people to handle in an emergency. In the case of oversteer, most people don't countersteer instinctively, and coming off the throttle too fast and applying brakes removes weight from the rear end usually making oversteer worse. Most non-performance RWD cars will have a tendency to understeer baked in but you can only fight physics so much.
Remember the best result from an accident is avoiding it altogether.

I really want to get an armada, they're dirt cheap right now and I like almost everything about it.
The major problem is I live (and thus always park) in a major metro area and the camera systems on the armada are ridiculously low resolution and only show on less than half of the infotainment screen.
It's virtually unusable and considering the size of the vehicle, and that every competitor has a superior system, I'm looking elsewhere.

Somewhat ironically, the minivan replaced the stigmatic station wagon for similarly nonsensical "image" reasons. The minivan was replaced, largely, by modular, car-based "SUV" vehicles which are nothing but sporty station wagons.
My kids soccer coach is a lifeflight pilot and only drives Suburbans. He’s seen some images that aren’t nonsensical.

I can see how this would get annoying. The cameras are not the best for sure. But the parking sensors are very sensitive and will alert even when you have quite a bit of room, so I don’t think you would actually hit anything.
For the price, I can deal with the few idiosyncrasies. Our “used” CPO Armada had 4000 miles on it with when bought it, and it came with a fantastic warranty. I couldn’t justify spending $12-15k more on a Tahoe when the Armada did everything we needed it to do.
