I work for a fortune 15 company and I know that in our office, we haven't had a "Christmas" party for over 30 years since a director who was one of those Christian offshoots who believes everyone is going to hell and doesn't believe in celebrating birthdays or holidays said that the idea of Christmas insulted him. So now, instead of a Christmas party, we have a "year end networking celebration" that's really a Christmas party in all but name. Also the company banned Christmas decorations in every building it owned. But this year, our company didn't own our building and the managers of our office had a Christmas decorations competition.

I don't understand why so many people are so quick to call bs on this happening. It happens in many retail places, as well as banks, fast food establishments; any place there is contact with the public. The more nationwide the corporation, the more likely announcements are sent out at the beginning of the Christmas season with protocol upper management wants employees to follow.

I don't like it or agree with it,but it's there and has been for years.

This year, though, I feel like I'm hearing a lot more "Merry Christmas's" than I have in a long time.

Who does? What companies do you know directs their employees to say Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas?

Having worked for two large companies whose workforce was 1/3 or more "call center" type people, I know firsthand that nearly every aspect of interaction is trained for, scripted, monitored and controlled.

Do they script the greetings? Absolutely.
