its fricking witchcraft
after review its clear that the spliced row isn't as long as it was prior to the cut, and notice how hes not pushing the bars together that hard, the shortened row and lack of pushing the bars back together closely, creates a small (albeit enough) space reduction to accommodate for the single removed piece

I didn't get it either the first time I saw it. I just gave up. I'm sure if I cut up some pieces of paper to do it, it would make sense. Lazy though.

They use a different top half after the animation
You can tell by the size of the bottom right square on the top half, it changes size after the animation, before there's only a tiny piece attached, after there's a larger piece attached
