And by "great uncle," you mean "great great" or just great?

Obviously just one "great" because he specified that it's his grandfather's brother.

So the lady in question would be his second cousin, once removed.

My great uncle’s grandchildren are my cousins. We see them every Thanksgiving minimum. Congrats on the retarded children

Congrats OP
I'm pretty sure there's a subreddit for incest, if you're looking for info

I grew up seeing my second cousins a lot. This is gross.

ETA: you’re a grown man. Do what you want.

Yeah the grandkids of my grandfathers brother are really close cousins to me. Is that what’s going on here?

***Update...The girl I'm seeing was on the phone all day yesterday with the church elders trying to figure out how we were related. Everyone was telling her that we were related but no one could say how. She finally got in touch with our retired pastor. He was able to say how we were related. He said that my great uncle, my grandfather's brother, was married to her great grandmother. I wasn't even gonna try figure out how were we related after that. It was so far down the line that it didn't matter to me. We are moving forward with our relationship.

So, basically what you knew yesterday... Your mom and her grandmother are first cousins. It's not that complicated, you are second cousins once removed.

How has no one recommended:

Ancestry.com

Yet?

Op please do this together, and post your results.

Wtf is Church Elders? Are you scientologist or Mormon? Why not ask your actual freaking family?

I'm envisioning them going to see some crotchety old man who pulls out some dusty, 200 year old book that constitutes this town's official birth and death register

OP should make sure to talk to the town's doctor to ensure there won't be any issues, and discuss this with the town's lone attorney to make sure all laws are being followed

Do people really get together with their extended family this often?

I don't know a single child from any of my great aunts/uncles from either side. I can only recall ever meeting 3 great aunts/uncles ever and 2 of those 3 are dead now, the other lives in California.

Another good point

Honestly, the part where his cousin calls to talk to him about something he found out about a girl he's been dating for a couple weeks seemed bizarre to me too

But maybe not if he lives in a town of 60 people and 55 of them are from the same extended family
