Pretty much the same type of conditions you would face in Nam. Except for the pine trees and flat terrain. Did you ever do Peason ridge and the Vietnam village, if it was still their?

I wasn’t at Polk for long thankfully. When we went to the field it was almost always to the tank range. I was moved from there to be a tank gunnery instructor at the Armor school back at Fort Knox.

Not saying it was right, in fact it was wrong. But that’s the reality of it. Of course there were notable exceptions to this in both wars like the Harlem Hellfighters in WWI, the 761st Armor Battalion, and Tuskegee Airmen of WWII. But for the vast majority of black soldiers in WWI and II, they spent the war never coming close to combat.

Sure, and they aren't handing them out like candy. There's only been a few awarded from the two world wars.

I just think calling the award "affirmative action" is a stretch. Johnson was worthy at the time, and France gave him a Croix du Guerre at the time for what he did.

You’re 100% correct. The only reason he wasn’t awarded the MoH, or at least a Silver Star at that time was the fact he was a black man. That’s fricked up. He deserved better and it’s a shame he never received his due while still alive.

My Retirement Orders say Fort Polk. So it’s always gonna be Fort Polk.

Wasting money on changing signs isn’t going to change the name. It’ll take 10-15 years before people get used to the name change.

I've always felt sorry for the kids stationed at Polk.

Think about this, if they want to go to "town" they either have to go to Alexandria or Lake Chuck...

If I get a terminal illness those would be the places I would go, 6 months would seem like an eternity.

Ft. Patton would have a better ring and they would only have to change the olk to atton.

I’m sure they’ll be renaming Fort Hood. Patton would be a fitting name.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember that. What about Fort Stuart?

I was stationed a Fort Polk briefly after the First Gulf War. The main thing I remember is during the summer, every day between 2-3 in the afternoon it would come a freaking deluge. Then as quick as it came, the rain was gone, the clouds were gone, and the sun, heat, and humidity were just brutal. Within minutes everything had steam coming off it, including us.

Average Louisiana day.

Or a private. Or in Special Forces and not the big green machine. Or from the wrong university in England.

Yes, it's fricked up, but not much more fricked up than what happened in Vietnam, the Boer War, the Korean War, etc. to enlisted folks in general.

And plenty of black men saw combat in WWII. Everyone on a ship is in combat at the same time including the dudes serving coffee, and truck drivers are targets too.

Doris Miller probably got the better end of the bargain, though. Name a ship after you, thousands of people will forever be associated with your name. Get awarded any ribbon, and people forget you as soon as the President wanders off the stage into a potted plant.

quote:

While gathering laundry on the U.S.S. West Virginia the day of the Pearl Harbor attack, Miller heard the alarm on his ship sound. He went to his battlestation, but it was damaged by enemy fire. After attempting to help a mortally wounded commanding officer, Miller manned a .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun and fired at the Japanese planes until he ran out of ammunition. He then helped other injured sailors evacuate.

I think he wasn't awarded it until Obama was in office which is wild. He was one of the Hellfighters.

Fort Hood is now Fort Cavazos. Sneakily appropriate because it's easily shortened to Fort CAV. Get it?

No one should have a problem with naming an Army base after a hero like Henry Johnson but I would have preferred somebody connected to Louisiana for the Fort Polk rebrand.
