Cotton is picked in the fall, but you’d think from modern movies and such that all slaves did was pick cotton year round.

They also plowed, planted cotton as well as food crops, hoed weeds, chopped wood, cooked, did laundry, worked livestock, cut hay, etc. Yet picking cotton is the only thing that is branded as slave behavior that is somehow now in poor taste.

Plantation scenes in movies often have cotton with white bolls, no matter the season.

Who guessed that international harvester was a racist company.

Hopefully, I'll pass a few cotton patches that haven't been mowed over on the way to Baton Rouge tomorrow. I need some new cotton bolls for my Christmas tree. They sho' do look good on a decorated tree.

This could have been many of our grand & great grandparents.

Racist is one of those words that means such different things to different people, leaving most discussions a joke.

That she married a black dude, but still might carry some racial baggage isn’t hard to reconcile.

But likewise not fair to jump straight to cotton equals racism. Odds are there’s something subconscious and kind of racially insensitive underlying it- but maybe not. And even if it is that doesn’t mean people were thinking she’s suddenly a klan member
